A tous ... ""Currently we have two cruises fully operating in Burma: Pandaw IV is on its way downstream from Bhamo with 37 passengers on board. The cruise director quite rightly took the decision not to stop in Mandalay but rather stop in smaller centres where there have been no disturbances. All passengers on board are in good spirits. The cruise will continue as per schedule and passengers will fly back to Rangoon from Pagan and then out on international flights as per schedule. We will though cancel Rangoon city centre sight seeing. All our pax stay at the Dusit Inya Lake resort, in the suburbs of the city near to the airport. The hotel is set in 30 acres of walled grounds in a very quiet area far from the areas where there have been disturbances. We also have 18 passengers today on our Pandaw II plying on a short cruise from Bagan to Mandalay again without incident. News reports indicate that the demonstrations have now ceased and government forces have resumed control. We all feel a poignant sense of grief for the fallen, and keen disappointment at the dashing of hopes for change and a better life. Despite this, life in Burma will eventually go on. The Pandaw ships in Burma are owned by a partnership of Pandaw employees. They have taken the decision that they will continue to operate so long as there is demand. It is their hope that Burma does not become ‘closed’ once again, whether as a result of xenophobic internal policy or, equally catastrophic, by further international sanctions. We at Pandaw Cruises, who market and manage these ships for the partnership, respect and support this decision. In Burma over seventy people are employed by Pandaw, not to mention suppliers and other service providers. Our hope is that the operations can continue to support these people and their extended families. Clearly with government advisories against travel to Burma we anticipate cancellations. Where possible we are rebooking cancelled parties on a later cruise or transferring these bookings to one of our current Mekong cruises. Any passengers wishing to completely cancel will be fully refunded. But, so long as there is demand we will keep running."" A bon entendeur ...
