The site of an ancient inland sea, the South Gobi is a treasure chest of fossilized dinosaur bones and eggs. Nestled between the beautiful peaks of the Gurvansaikhan (three beauties) Mountains towering 10,000 feet above the surrounding steppe, Yol Am (Eagle's Valley) Canyon shelters glaciers which remain frozen even on the summer's hottest days. The Gobi is a fantastic natural habitat of Argali sheep, snow leopards, wild Bactrian camels and eagles. UlaanBaatar The country's Buddhist-art rich capital is located in north central Mongolia on the Tula River. The pine covered mountains, wide boulevards, squares, parks and ger communities which surround the central monastery and cover the slopes north of the city combine to give the city a spacious, rustic charm. Points of interest include the Bogd Khan Winter Palace Museum displaying the gorgeous ceremonial robes of the last living Buddha, and the functioning Gandan Monastery, built in 1840 and one of the country's most impressive sights. Terelj Terelj is set in a spectacular valley only an hour's drive from UlaanBaatar. Stroll through green meadows carpeted with edelweiss and a dazzling variety of other wild flowers. View fascinating rock formations against a backdrop of pine-covered mountains and wander along the wooded banks of a mountain stream. Experience traditional ger living while roaming the land of the endless sky. Kara Korum & Erdene Zhu Explore the ruins of Genghis Khan's capital, Kara Korum - the 13th century center of the ancient Golden Horde empire that stretched across two continents. Visit the nearby Erdene Zhu Monastery, the first Buddhist center in Mongolia built in 1584 and constructed from the stones of the ruined capital. At its height, the monastery housed 1000 monks in 100 temples. Today, Erdene Zuu is once again functioning, with four temples to visit, renovation and expansion proceeding and 150 monks in residence. Hovsgol Lake Located in the far Northern region of the country bordering Siberia is Mongolia's best kept secret - Hovsgol Lake. The dark blue pearl of Mongolia is legendary for its beauty and renown for its water pure enough to drink. Often referred to as the sister lake of neighboring Siberia's Baikal, some scientists have theorized that the lakes are actually connected underground. Bordered by deep rocky western coasts climbing gradually to the top of Munku-Sardyk Mountain, Hovsgol Lake is rich in salmon and a wide variety of other fish. Elks, moose, deer, wolves, foxes and numerous species of bird can be found in the lakeside environment. Altai Region Along the western edge of the country, bordering Kazakhstan, are the mysterious Altaii Mountains. The inhabitants of this region are Kazakhs whose life-style and traditions differ from their Mongol cousins, particularly their use of trained eagles for hunting. The preparation ceremony, the hunt and the cheerful celebration which follows a successful hunt provide a fascinating insight into the local culture. The mountain rivers and tiny fresh-water lakes of the region afford for magnificent exploratory opportunities.
