Hello everyone, we’re finishing a cruise from Marseille to Valparaiso on the morning of December 23, and we’re flying out of Santiago on the 27th around noon. What do you recommend we visit in such a short time, and how? Do you also have any tips for accommodation? We were thinking of spending 2 days in Valparaiso and 2 days in Santiago. And what about transportation between the two cities? A little detail: We’re an older couple, 80 and 81 years old! We still walk well, but we’re not polyglots. Luckily, we’ll have Google Translate and an eSIM card! This trip is kind of our 60th wedding anniversary. Thanks to everyone. Mado and Maurice.

Hi there. For transportation from Valparaiso to Santiago, check out the TURBUS website. The bus ride takes about 2 hours, and there are plenty of departures. You can buy your ticket at the Terminal Rodoviario (near Plaza O'Higgins). For more info, take a look at this 2015 discussion. You can also reach out to Thierry6789, who’s been living in Santiago for a long time. For accommodation in Santiago, check out this recent discussion. Best regards, JLMA

Hello,

If you arrive early in the morning on December 23rd in Valparaíso, I recommend spending the day there and staying overnight. The first thing to do would be to drop off your luggage at the hotel right away. If your room isn’t ready yet, you can leave them in storage. This will save you, for safety and convenience, from having to carry them everywhere with you.

On the morning of the 24th, you could still take a leisurely stroll around the port city before heading to Santiago in the afternoon. You have two options:

- Either take a regular bus between the two cities. In this case, to get to Valparaiso’s bus terminal, I strongly recommend taking a taxi from your hotel.

- Or if you have a vehicle, you could visit one of the vineyards in the Casablanca Valley along the way.

The 25th is a public holiday in Chile: everything, or almost everything, will be closed. For Christmas Eve, Chileans usually celebrate with family, so few restaurants will be open.

On the 25th and 26th, you can explore Santiago at your own pace before leaving Chile on the 27th. Just two more small notes:

- Regarding the prices mentioned in the discussion above by @JLMA, those are from 2015 and are no longer current.

- I’d also advise against walking with your suitcases from the cruise terminal to the bus station: while it wasn’t the case in 2015, the area is now very crowded with street vendors, making it difficult to navigate the sidewalks.

Have a great trip!

Hi there, and thanks so much for your reply! Actually, we’re arriving by boat on the morning of December 23rd in San Antonio, near Valparaiso. Are there any transportation options between the two cities? Is the region unsafe at all? Have a great day!

Hi there,

If you're arriving in San Antonio, it takes about 1.5 hours by regular bus to get there.

There’s a discussion on this topic that was opened back in 2017, and even though it’s a bit old, it’s still more or less up to date: https://voyageforum.com/forum/valparaiso-modification-possible-arrivees-departs-en-croisiere-d8301035/

Prices have changed a bit since then, though.

Good luck!
