Hi everyone,

I’m planning my next trip to India, and my first stop will be the city of Nashik. I’d like to stay there for 3 nights, maybe even 4, to really soak up the atmosphere. Could anyone recommend where to stay and also suggest some good hotels at reasonable prices?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

I’m not sure if my reply will help since I visited Nasik back in 2010. I remember a government-run hotel right in the heart of the old town that didn’t look like much, quite close to the ghats where religious rituals take place. But the rooms were more than decent and very spacious for an absolutely ridiculous price, even in 2010: 175 rupees! Mine was way better than most of the rooms I had for much more money during the same trip through Maharashtra and Karnataka. I think the address was listed in the Lonely Planet guide at the time, but I can’t remember now—I’ll try to dig it up.

Staying for 3 days is a great idea to soak in the atmosphere of the ghats, which feels a bit like Varanasi but much less crowded, especially in the mornings. I do recall, though, that I met a hostile pilgrim who asked about my religion and told me I didn’t belong there because it was a place only for Hindus. But that only happened once.

There’s also a lively downtown area with lots of shops and restaurants, the famous Shiva temple in Trimbakeshwar about an hour away by bus—its pilgrimage also offers a nice hike through the lush green hills—and some pretty cool Buddhist caves not too far from the city.

It’ll also depend on when you’re planning to go.

Hi Pagaljavab,

Thanks for your message and sorry for my late reply. I’ll be there in early October, and then I plan to head down to Gokarna.

Have a great day!

Charlie
