Hi there, I’ll be in Brazil from December 10th to the end of February. I’ve sketched out a rough itinerary but I’m not sure how to arrange it—considering the climate, year-end holidays, and Carnival. Basically, I’m thinking of the Amazon, the Northeast coast with Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (but skipping Chapada Diamantina), Ouro Preto, Paraty, and Ilha Grande—but no Rio visit. Is this doable in 3 months? Which direction should I take for this itinerary? Thanks in advance!

hi there, if you want to travel down the Amazon by boat, the flow goes from west to east. Then you’ll need to consider the air "hubs." In the Amazon, the main hub is Manaus. If you want to go to Tabatinga, for example, or even Belém, you’ll pretty much have to connect through Manaus—check the flight schedules. For the more central region, the hub is Brasília. Otherwise, there’s no particular direction to follow

Hi there! If you're staying until the end of February, I’d recommend saving the Amazon for last. In December, water levels (depending on the year) are really low—so low that in some places there’s no water at all. I’ve been there during the low-water period at the end of the dry season, and let me tell you, it’s *rough*. It’s scorching hot, and there are hardly any spots to swim.

You can check out this site for updates:

It shows the water level of the Rio Negro. If it’s below 20 meters, I’d wait before heading there.

Thanks for the info, Djack. When’s the best time to go to the Amazon—less rain and moderate water levels? I’m planning to explore there by packraft (inflatable boat).

For your itinerary, go in February. You’ll get some rain, of course, but make sure to look up what the rainy season is like if you’re not already familiar with it.

if you want to go down the Amazon by boat, the downstream direction is from west to east

Well yeah, otherwise the other way is going upstream on the Amazon.
