Which way to visit Giza?

Hi there,

We’ll be traveling to Egypt in mid-February and plan to spend a full day on the Giza Plateau: visiting the pyramids site + the new GEM (Grand Egyptian Museum). The question is simple: in what order should we do these two visits? I’m torn: - Pyramids in the morning because it’s less crowded, or in the afternoon for the setting sun? - GEM in the morning since tickets are timed slots, so it’d be easier to stick to the schedule than if we visit the pyramids first (we don’t know exactly how long our visit will take and when we’ll be able to get to the GEM), or in the afternoon? Anyway, I’m looking forward to your suggestions for planning this day!

On another note, the day before, we’ll arrive at our hotel on the Giza Plateau around 2:30 PM. How could we spend the rest of the afternoon (keeping in mind we don’t want to overdo it since we’ll have just flown in from France and had a very short night before!)?

Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone, It depends on the person—some prefer mornings, others afternoons. I’ve done both, but since I usually spend several hours (or almost the whole day) at a "major" site, I start with the Giza plateau in the morning. And definitely avoid going on Fridays—it’s a day off, so *everyone* crowds in. It doesn’t bother us much, but for wide-angle photos, it’s a headache. You have to frame carefully, not to mention people who think it’s fun to walk right in front of you while you’re taking a shot. Honestly, it’s like that everywhere.

For your last point, given the time, I’d take it slow: settle into your room, unpack (you’ll thank yourself the next day), grab a bite to eat. One place we often go when we’re in Cairo near the pyramids is "Habou Shakra"—right across from the pyramids. Head upstairs; there are huge windows so you can admire the view while eating. It’s next to a bookstore on one side and a hotel on the other.

And for the evening, if your hotel has a rooftop terrace (most of them do), you don’t even need to buy a ticket for the sound and light show. Just watch it from your hotel, especially if it’s well-located. Thoutmosis

Okay, thanks for your reply. Since we’ll be there on a Friday in our schedule, we’ll probably head to the pyramids site early—maybe there’ll be fewer people around early in the morning!

Hello everyone, Oh no, even very early it's swarmed—we've been there before, and it's always the same. When there are "school groups," it's even worse. The quietest time is during the midday prayer, around noon. It's a bit complicated to explain because the exact time is set by the nearest mosque, so not all mosques have the same prayer time. But to simplify, it's after noon, early afternoon.

Also, you can wander among the tombs behind the Pyramid of Khufu and check out the mastabas scattered everywhere—though the openings to the tombs may change.

If you have time, head behind the Pyramid of Menkaure for a beautiful view of the entire Giza site. Thutmose

Hi there,

Especially on a Friday, I’d recommend getting to the Giza pyramids as early as possible. Even though it’s the weekend for Egyptians, that’s still when you’ll find the fewest crowds. So for the GEM in the afternoon, expect crowds and apparently reservations are highly recommended—the museum seems to be swamped.

Best,

Well, we'll just have to deal with the crowds! Thanks for your tips!

Alright, we've decided—we'll head to the pyramids first thing in the morning and then continue to the GEM in the afternoon. Thanks for your tips

Hi Sennedjem, It’s great to see you here! I don’t know where you are, but if you’re in Egypt, stay there—here, well, I know it’s autumn, but still, if it keeps up, we’ll be walking around with palm trees on our feet 😛. Have a good weekend. Thoutmosis
