Driving the RN7 in Madagascar

I just got back from an unforgettable road trip in Madagascar where I drove down the legendary RN7. It connects Tana (the capital) to Tulear. Since we were traveling as a group of girls, we decided to go with a guide. I’d never done an “organized” trip before, but I have to say we loved this first tailor-made travel experience. From the highlands of the Red Island down to the west coast, by the Mozambique Channel. Vast landscapes as far as the eye can see Human encounters Discovering ancestral artisanal know-how Sunsets over the ochre mountains Intense, precious moments with my friends We loved the mountains, visits to artisans, and the parties too ;-) We used local guides to show us specific spots (like Isalo National Park, where we were able to bivouac)

Hello, Wouldn’t it be better to describe (even briefly) your trip with the different stages, including the ones you particularly enjoyed, rather than focusing so much on the Guide... It feels a bit like an ad, honestly.

25 years ago, my wife, my 10-year-old son, and I did pretty much the same thing over 3 weeks without a guide—just by taking *taxis brousse*. It’s not that complicated. Plus, if you want a bit more comfort and to leave quickly, you just buy one or two extra seats in the *taxi brousse*, and it’s way more economical.

We only hired guides in Ranomafana and Isalo for a 5-day trek starting from Ranohira because it was mandatory. For the rest of our route toward Tuléar and even further south, we managed just fine on our own...

Spot on and completely accurate—we did this with a rented taxi in Tana back in 1991 with 15 people from 8 different nationalities over 12 days. Such a great experience and so many memories! You can totally manage on your own in Madagascar. I’ve been doing this since 1991, with no fewer than 35–40 trips ranging from 35 days to 3 months. Travel agencies are really just for those who are super cautious or don’t want to spend a little time preparing.
