Is it possible to enter Sri Lanka with a continuation ticket to India without having a valid Indian visa for the planned departure date from Sri Lanka? That way, I could get my visa during my stay in Sri Lanka. I have a valid Indian visa that expires mid-stay, and I can only apply for a new one once the current one has expired.

No, they’re two different countries. The Sri Lankan immigration officer won’t check your Indian visa—they’ll just verify that you have your ETA.
During your stay, go to the Indian consulate in Kandy or the embassy in Colombo (I gave you the addresses). You submit your application, and they’ll get back to you once it’s approved...
