Hi there! I have to leave Ivato/Antananarivo on December 16th. I have a lot of ariary that I’d like to exchange for euros since I might not be coming back to Madagascar (after this 21st trip). I think the exchange office at Ivato also buys ariary back. If any of you have seen the rate for this buyback in advance, thanks a million!

I don’t know the current buy-back rate for ariary, but you should expect a really big depreciation. In any case, the best option is to look for travelers or Malagasy people who are leaving on a trip soon.*

Hi there, I stopped by yesterday, and the Forex at the airport sells euros at 5,140 ariary for 1 euro. Honestly, I think it's a really good rate—it even surprised me!

They buy euros back at around 4,800 ariary, which isn’t bad at all.

Hi! I got back on the 15th, and since I had 480,000 Ar left and I’m not sure I’ll be coming back (was this my 21st or 22nd trip?), I had my ariary exchanged at Ivato by Best Change. They gave me a really good rate—5,140 Ar for 1 €—whereas just a few days earlier in Antalaha, BNI was asking for 5,436 Ar for 1 €.

Perfect

That matches what I’d seen there. The Forex rates at the airport—both buying and selling—are really competitive. Unlike a lot of countries. Honestly, we tried calling in favors with contacts in town for better rates, but there wasn’t any noticeable difference (sometimes they even offered us less).

So might as well not bother for peanuts and just do what you want/can when you arrive, then exchange directly at the airport when you leave.

A little extra tip for an even better rate at a currency exchange office in town: you can go to the Jmy Exchange office in Antaninarena, just a stone's throw from the Colbert in a small shopping arcade on Rue des Bijouteries. It's really worth it, especially for buying euros at a good rate (particularly 50€ notes and above). The environment is secure and reassuring. In the same arcade, there’s also a small, unassuming restaurant that offers a surprisingly nice and varied menu at very affordable prices—Malasagy Tasty Food. Great for breakfast with coffee/bread or Malagasy options (omelet, kitoza, vary amin'anana...), or a wide selection for lunch (frog legs, fillet with foie gras sauce, honey-glazed pork, mine sao...) at gentle prices (dishes between 15,000 and 18,000 ariary).
