Je pars cet été aux Etats Unis et j'ai profité d'une petite visite chez mon banquier cette semaine pour lui poser quelques questions concernant l'utilisation de la carte Visa Premier notamment pour effectuer des retraits et des paiements en dollars sur place aux USA.
Et bien vous savez quoi ? Pour chaque retrait effectué dans un distributeur de billets hors zone Euro, la banque me prélève une commission de 3€ + 2.5% du montant du retrait et ce quelque soit le montant retiré 🙁
Le banquier, malgrè tout honnête 😉 m'a confié que j'avais intérêt à utiliser le moins possible ma carte si je voulais éviter les frais, d'où la solution d'effectuer du change avant de partir ou mieux de prendre des traveller cheques en grande quantité sachant qu'on peut se les faire reprendre au retour s'il en reste - mais j'en doute 😕
Mes questions maintenant :
Connaissez-vous des établissements bancaires ou autres où l'achat de travellers cheque est particulièrement intéressants ?
Etant donné que je vais acheter des travellers en Dollars (dites moi si je fais une bétise s'il vaut mieux que je les prenne en Euros mais j'en doute), - faut il attendre avant le départ genre mois de juillet ou vaut-i mieux les acheter tout de suite ? Je me demande en effet comment va évoluer le dollar sachant que juste avant l'été une remontée de celui ci n'est pas exclu surtout si un grand nombre de touristes affluent vers les USA en achetant des devises.
Ce que je fais généralement quand je voyage, soit je prends tout en cash, soit, si la somme est trop importante, je prends à peu près la moitié en cash et je retire avec la carte une fois en milieu de séjour, ce qui me permet de tenir jusqu'à la fin. Avec la carte, il ne faut pas retirer de petites sommes à l'étranger, à cause des taxes, comme te l'a dit ton banquier.
Pour les bureaux de change en France, tu peux voir aussi rue de Rennes, le 1er bureau entre la tour Montparnasse et la Fnac. Ils ont toutes les devises possibles et pratiquent des tarifs souvent intéressants. Et puis, de façon générale dans tous les bureaux de change, si tu changes une grosse somme, tu as un prix.
Pour les USA, si tu prends des travellers prends les obligatoirement en dollars. Sur place, tu peux directement payer avec, exactement comme un billet, et ils te rendent même la monnaie. Essaie de savoir aussi quel est le pourcentage prélevé si tu payes avec ta carte (resto, hotel ...). C'est possible que ce soit moins important que pour les retraits.
Je ne sais pas si c'est tjrs d'actualité, mais fut un temps où tu pouvais acheter des devises sans frai à la BANQUE DE FRANCE en fait c'etait possible sans comande
au bureau qui est pres du Louvre…
Cependant…ton banquier semble avoir oublié de tout te dire…car si tu utilises ta visa aux guichets de la banque us partenaire de la tienne…c'est sans frai😉

Gabye, il me semblait effectivement avoir entendu parler de cette histoire de banques partenaires et de retrait sans frais à leur guichet, j'en ai d'ailleurs parlé à mon banquier qui m'a dit ne pas être au courant et que d'après lui ce n'était pas vrai.
Sais-tu où je pourrais trouver ces éventuels partenaires ? Pour info ma banque est le CIC.
Avec la carte Visa ( et aussi mastercard) émise par Citibank, si vous approvisionnez le compte-carte avant le départ, tous vos retraits à l'étranger sont gratuits quel qu'en soit le montant ( normal puisque citibank considère qu'il ne doit pas compter de frais pour récupérer votre argent, la banque n'avance rien !). Et en plus, pour une cotisation de 10 euros supplémentaire, vous bénéficier d'une ristourne de 2 % sur tous vos achats ( pas les retraits !) de avril à fin août et 1/2 % le reste de l'année. La cotisation est vite récupérée surtout si vous payer les billets d'avion avec !
Je ne sais pas si cela existe en France ou ailleurs ?
comme alternative, tu peux te procurer la carte americanexpress Air France: cout faible et aucune commission ou autre quand tu paies avec. En NZ, je l'utilisais même pour acheter un Mars par exemple...
ça me ferait un peu mal que ce ne soit pas vrai le coup de la banque partenaire…puisque je l'ai moi même utilisé au Canada via SCOTTIA partenaire de BNP…😛

Total en cours de route, les frais + un virement arrivé en retard…et pof…le gentil banquier bloque ma visa(😠🏴☠️🤪) je fais virer d'une autre banque une somme consistante le même jour…mais rien n'y a fait!

désolé, mais la carte american express air france n'a strictement rien à voir avec la visa premier. Alors, pourquoi la comparer ? l'amex ne coute que 25 euros : tu peux payer partout avec aux etats unis sans aucun frais.
Pour ma part, Ailleursland (presente sur le forum) m'avait mise au courant lors du blocage de ma visa au Canada…j'ignore comment elle l'a su, mais tu peux peut être lui demander…
Sinon tu fais marcher tes p'tits neurones et tu vas fouiller sur la toile …si les banques ont des partenaires, c'est forcement qu'elles sont en reseau comme les cies aeriennes d'ailleurs…ce genre de chose laisse des traces😉

Je viens de lire Gabye, je vais essayer de répondre à tes questions et de te faire voir que la visa 1er a son utilité en te racontant quelques anecdotes.
Il y a quelques années en Espagne, je suis partie avec carte bancaire uniquement, pas de cash. Sur place, avec un de mes potes, on a fait des fiestas d'enfer, on a claqué un maximum. Le distributeur, je pouvais y aller les yeux fermés ( bonjour la surprise des frais sur mon relevé de compte en rentrant d'ailleurs ! ) et un beau jour, j'y vais comme d'hab....et là je vois : RETRAIT NON AUTORISE ! J'appelle en France pour savoir ce qui se passe....et j'apprends que la limite de retrait par semaine était je crois de 3000 ou 3500 francs. Et là rien à faire sinon attendre quelques jours avant de pouvoir retirer de l'argent. Génial !!!
Comme je suis une spécialiste de la poisse en voyage ( les galères de cartes c'est vraiment une broutille je te rassure ), l'histoire s'est répétée plusieurs fois dans plusieurs pays, et la plus grosse galère c'était à Cuba, où je voyageais seule. Va demander à un cubain de te prêter 20 $ ( son salaire mensuel ), c'est pas la joie. Pour la 1ère fois, j'ai dû appeler mes parents à la rescousse...Et avec Cuba, en ce qui concerne le fric, on peut pas dire que je sois confiante...attente vraiment galère...merci les parents !
En rentrant de ce voyage, je me suis penchée sur la question avec mon conseiller bancaire. Et là miracle, la visa 1er.
En gros, avec elle, j'ai un gros plafond de retrait par semaine ( 1500 euros je crois ) et en cas de coup dur, quand t'es à l'étranger pour n'importe quoi ( t'es malade, un pépin avec les flics, un cambriolage ( expérience vécue ), je t'assure que ça sert.
Ensuite, elle couvre l'assurance annulation, bagages, rapatriement pour les billets d'avion.
Elle me fait économiser les assurances des locations de voiture et là, c'est pas négligeable.
Je vois pas pourquoi aux states, on ne te la prendrait pas, as-tu été voir sur www.budget.com, jamais eu de problème avec eux.
Les frais dans les distributeurs sont beaucoup moins élevés.
J'ai résolu en partie ce problème, chaque fois que je pars quelque part, j'appelle ma banque pour qu'elle ne donne les coordonnées de la banque partenaire à l'étranger ( retraits gratuits ) s'il elle existe.
Y a plein d'autres services, genre tu perds ta carte, on t'en envoie une autre en 48 heures sans frais...la liste est plutôt longue, je vais m'arrêter-là...tu dois pouvoir trouver les services de visa 1er sur le net.
Bon évidemment elle a un coût cette carte, tout dépend de ce que tu vas faire et comment elle va te servir et à quelle fréquence. Ca c'est à toi de voir...
Concernant les travellers, bon alors moi, j'aime pas, je pars jamais avec. Mais quand je dois changer, je vais aux Halles, y a plein de bureaux de change tenus par des asiatiques. Ils se connaissent tous et tu peux négocier les taux...en faisant jouer la concurrence.

j'ai un compte a la BNP et une visa premier.
la banque partenaire aux USA est bank of america;
je ne retire du cash que la, je ne me sers jamais de ma carte pour payer quoi que ce soit et je n'ai PAS de frais a payer. ton banquer se fiche de toi!
telephone plutot a Visa premier, et eux te diront ce qu'il en est
ceci dit la carte sert..
pour les assurances auto aux usa, tu as quand meme la cdw... ok, ce n'est pas complet
mais tu as egalement un contrat europe assistance; ce qui en soit, est valable.
par exemple a 2 un contrat EA revient a peu pres a 150 euros, et la carte a 80... on est deja gagnant.
de plus cela fonctionne tres bien, je m'en suis deja servi.
on te rembourse le complement que ta mutuelle et la SS, n'ont evidemment pas paye, les tarifs medicaux americains etant largement au dessus des notres.
pas de frais de change ni commission fixe, ca fait quand meme pas mal d'argent de gagne.
Tu n'as pas a payer d'assurance annulation lorque tu achetes tes billets d'avion.
avant de dire que c'est une belle m**** relis ton contrat et le fascicule que ta banque doit t'avoir donne, et tu y trouveras bien des avantages🙂😉😛😎

J'avoue m'être un peu emballé en disant de la Visa 1er que c'était une belle m**** mais faut dire que j'ai écrit le post juste après mon rdv avec mon banquier et que lui même n'avait pas l'air très convaincu de l'utilité de cette carte.
Fabienne tu as raison, je crois que je vais appeler Visa Premier directement, j'aurai plus de renseignement !

Tu as raison d'evoquer ce probleme de taux de change!
j'ai ete la semaine derniere changer des euros pour la premiere fois a la poste et le taux etait tres correct, exactement celui que j'ai trouve sur internet avant d'y aller.
Pour moi qui habite un village, c'est plus pratique de comme cela plutot que de courir a Paris changer, perdre une demie journee, et peut etre gagner quelques centimes en tout sur la transaction.
Cela arrangera surement egalement certains d'entre nous.
ET de toutes façons, c'est moins cher que mes 78 euros de commission a Roissy pour 1500 euros echanges, sans parler du taux.....😮😕🤪🤪

le bon plan pour des dollars pas cher c'est la rue du faubourg-montmartre dans le 9ème. Il y a là-bas une ou deux bureaux top pour les cours.Ya pas mieux à paris. va là-bas çà va le faire ! (c'est vrai qu'avec la carte bancaire bonjour les frais vaut mieux eviter a l'etranger). salut.

je suis allé ce matin avec plusieurs dizaines d'€ à la poste pour acheter mes $ pensant que la commission était légère : j'en suis reparti en courant ! le cours d'achat était, commixssioons incluses à 1, 25 alors que le cours réel en bourse est à 1, 35 !!
le seul bon plan possible semble les bureaux de change parisiens mais savez vous s'il y en a en province ? notamment en Bretagne ...
également savez vous si à Roissy ?
par ailleurs pouvez vous me confirmer que l'AEX ne prend aucun frais car j'en ai une ?.
L'amex gold d'air france est comparable à la visa premier en ce qui concerne les assurances et les montants de paiement ; elle est facturée 125 €. En revanche avec l'amex pas de possibilité de retrait au DAB 😉
C'est faux, tout au moins avec une AMEX Air France, tu peux tout à fait retirer au DAB à l'étranger. Il te suffit d'avoir plus de 6 mois d'ancienneté, aucun défaut de prélèvement et de les appeller avant de partir. Ils te font choisir un code à 4 chiffres et ensuite c'est bon. Pas de miles gagnés par ce biais et une commission de 2% sur les montants (3€ fixes pour retraits < 150€).

I just discovered a great show on Arte.
It's called "7 en route": seven young European journalists travel around Europe in a fully converted bus, making reports on every city they visit. It's amazing! 🙂
Yesterday, for example, they were in Rome, Italy, and the reports included things like the world's smallest restaurant—a super romantic spot for two. There was also a report on the king of paparazzi in Italy.
They have to pick topics that let us discover the little quirks of each country. And at the end of each episode, we get to see the finished report.
It's such a great show, mixing journalism, travel, and discovery—basically, a must-watch!

My imagination never stays fallow for long. Just enough time for my inner land to rest. It gets overgrown with fresh nettles, the kind you can pick without getting stung. Then, it’s time to till the fragrant earth and let the story grow.
I hesitated over where to set this story.
Maybe the Highlands, maybe the Hebrides, maybe the Orkney Islands, maybe the Shetland Islands. All of Scotland is myth—easy to embroider.
But in the end, no. I’d almost be too afraid to bare my soul.
The story will take place at home. Simple, practical.

This morning, I was up well before dawn, feeling a bit grumpy, but nothing a bowl of coffee won’t fix. I love my bowl, and no one dares take it. It’s porcelain, edged with intertwined blue flowers. On the bottom, it says "Revol." The factory has existed long before the Revolution. It was my great-grandmother’s bowl. She drank roasted barley from it during the war, then her Leroux chicory.
Last year, a little guy dropped it. My bowl broke into three pieces. A black anger vibrated deep inside me. The little boy was so upset, on the verge of tears. How could I scold him!
I picked up the three pieces and took Little Boy in my arms. His hair smelled of the light, sweet sweat of toddlers. A gentle hug that healed—his budding sorrow and my anger—everything vanished, and time carried on.
Today, my bowl is even prettier. Man fixed it using the traditional kintsugi technique, except he didn’t use gold powder or lacquer but superglue, and he delicately painted the cracks with woad blue. And my bowl is even more beautiful now.
I’m lingering, I can tell—it’s just that a story wraps itself in life, and life can’t be told in the snap of a finger. Life is long. Like in architecture, you start with a rough sketch, called a "sous-cul" (the initial pencil drawing), then you make a tracing, which is the work itself, the one you later carefully roll up in a wooden tube.
Life is like that: you erase, you start over, you use the nub of the pencil until it’s tiny, but you keep going—dreaming, loving.

I’m planning a 3-week trip to Japan in May with Voyage Privé. The package includes a 5 GB eSIM, but my phone isn’t new enough to support it. VP told me I could buy a SIM card when I arrive at the airport.
Sure enough, I’ve seen online that this is possible with different providers.
I only need it for checking routes, looking up addresses, train schedules, etc.—basically using Google Maps, TripAdvisor, and similar apps. No heavy downloads or major internet use. All hotels should provide free Wi-Fi for that, right?
Has anyone got any tips for me on this? What have you tried, and how much did it cost?

I’d like to know if you can buy reef-safe sunscreen sprays at 7-Eleven. If so, how much do they cost? We’re traveling with backpacks, so we’ll either buy 100ml here or in Thailand.
I wanted to share a really unpleasant experience from our last trip booked with Promoséjours and organized by FTI.
We booked an 8-day/7-night stay in Egypt, from June 8 to 15.
The flight initially scheduled was changed a week before departure to take off at 10 PM from Paris CDG.
In the end, it took off with a 1-hour delay and included an unmentioned stopover in Marsa Alam.
We landed in Hurghada at 4 AM and arrived at the hotel at 6 AM.
So, we spent our first night on the plane.
For the return trip, surprise—the flight was moved up. We left the hotel at 10:30 PM on Friday the 14th to take off at 2 AM and land at 7 AM at Paris CDG.
So, we spent our last night on the plane too.
After sending a complaint letter to Promoséjours / FTI, they replied that the first and last days can be dedicated to transport (which I already knew) and that no matter how many nights you book, you’re not guaranteed to spend them in the hotel—it could just as well be on the plane.
I’m really questioning this.
Isn’t there a law that protects customers in cases like this?
Because when I do the math, the first and part of the second day were spent on transport, same for the second-to-last and last day. And I paid for 7 nights for a stay that only lasted 5.
Anyway, I just want to say thanks to them—thanks to their two sleepless nights in transit, I’m coming back even more exhausted from a trip that was supposed to be restful!
I also want to warn anyone booking through this agency about visas for Egypt.
At booking, they told me the visa was included in the price, then they sent me an email saying I’d have to pay for it on-site at 25 €.
Once there, we were directed to a special line for FTI customers, and guess what? They charged us 30 €!
Basically, they’re great at making sure you *enjoy* your vacation—mostly by enjoying your wallet!
If anyone has dealt with this kind of situation and won their case, I’m all ears.

So I thought I’d get a Thai SIM card to use Google Maps for getting around cities, mostly.
Here’s my question: will this SIM affect my apps? Or will they work the same as with my Orange SIM?
Is there any setup I need to do, or can I just pop in the Thai SIM?
I’d also like to switch back to my Orange SIM now and then while I’m in Thailand—on the same phone. Will I need to reset the phone, or will it reconnect without any issues?

I’m reaching out to all travelers and globe-trotters on this forum. I’m a teacher in Creuse working in a ULIS program (which welcomes children aged 6 to 12 with disabilities into a mainstream school). This year, I’m launching a school journal project that will involve the kids in many different topics. A big part of this journal will focus on opening up to the world, embracing differences, travel, global cultures, and more.
I’m putting out a call to invite as many of you as possible to send us a postcard (from France or anywhere in the world)! The goal is to help us "travel" and discover new places, countries, and horizons in a way that’s much more fun and exciting than a geography textbook. One section of our journal could be called "We received a letter from ," where we’d research the location and share what we learn with our readers—a really enriching activity for the classroom.
The project starts in September 2025 but doesn’t have a strict end date, since this journal and world-discovery initiative will span several school years (the kids stay in the ULIS program for multiple years). Postcards can be sent anytime—throughout the year, across seasons, even during holidays! The kids will find them when they return.
I hope this idea appeals to as many of you as possible, and that you’ll spread the word to your fellow travelers. Help us dream and explore!

It appears to be Somali pirates who have widened their search in the Mozambique Channel, far from their usual attack zone, since, to my knowledge, there are no Malagasy pirates.

Where’s Cape Vidal?
It’s in iSimangaliso, an independent park in KZN Wildlife, stunning and just a stone’s throw from St Lucia (KwaZulu-Natal, Maputaland).
It’s the beach spot at the end of the Eastern Shores road. You can swim, fish... but watch out for waves, currents, and sharks...
There’s a really nice game drive where you can get out of your car at certain points, especially at Cape Vidal.
That’s where the camp with bungalows and campsites is.
The vervets and samango monkeys (endemic to the area, and the males are pretty big) can be a bit of a nuisance if you’re trying to braai...
They’re super persistent and not shy at all—don’t let them intimidate you, and stay alert because their speed at snatching food is impressive.
Anyway...
I’m reporting two recent attacks by these hyenas... who were *not* in a playful mood...
The first one happened at night—a hyena tried to bite a camper’s nose off in their tent... and succeeded.
The other night, a camper returning to their tent in the early hours was violently attacked by two hyenas... and they had a close call!
So, if you’re camping there, be careful...
Measures are being taken, but for now, it’s a bit risky.
A white rental Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4 carrying foreign tourists was attacked at the entrance of Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park in the village of Bekopaka, western Madagascar, yesterday. So far, there’s been no response from the central government to curb these repeated armed attacks—usually between Malagasy people, but this time targeting foreign tourists.
After an engine failure in mid-2016 on a long-haul flight from BRISBANE to LYON, I developed a persistent aviophobia that I’m struggling to shake off. It’s becoming more and more of a hindrance.
Up until now, I’ve been using an avoidance strategy (for example, avoiding destinations that would require any other mode of transport than a car or train), but lately, it’s become really limiting.
I’m looking for a therapist—either in-person or via video call—who could help me get past this hurdle.
