Après plus de 3 mois de lecture dans cette partie du forum et également la lecture de merveilleux carnets sur l'Ouest des USA, je me lance enfin dans "l'écriture" 😉
Petite présentation des protagonistes auparavant : nous (Jérôme et Mélanie, 28 ans) sommes des jeunes mariés de l'été 2010 et nous avons envisagé un voyage de noces dans l'Ouest des USA.
Le jeune marié étant aussi un passionné de mécanique et de vitesse, nous avons décidé avec un groupe d'amis de nous lancer dans l'aventure "record de vitesse avec une moto française de 1934 à Bonneville Salt Flats" pendant la Speedweek, qui a lieu en aout de chaque année près de Wendover dans l'Utah et qui permet à tous les fous de vitesse sur engins roulants motorisés de pulvériser des records, en toute légalité. Nous allons donc rester la semaine complète sur place afin de revenir avec un record.

Le décor étant planté, une fois les dates de la Speedweek connues, il n'y avait plus qu'à faire le tri dans toutes les merveilles à découvrir dans l'Ouest des Etats-unis et essayer de faire plaisir à tout le monde (bon ça va, on est que 2, ça devrait pas être trop compliqué !).
J'ai bien vite compris que l'on ne pourrait pas tout voir donc pour un premier voyage j'ai essayé de caser les incontournables, en espérant que l'on aura l'occasion d'y revenir (je crois que j'ai déjà attrapé le virus à cause de vous, sans y être encore allée 😛)

Je suis bien consciente que certaines étapes sont baclées, comme la traversée de Yosemite sans réellement visiter (juste Tuolumne Grove pour les séquoias + différents arrêts le long de la Tioga Pass Road) mais ce que j'ai pu lire sur les hébergements à Yosemite ne m'a pas convaincu d'ajouter un jour là-bas...
Je suis également assez triste de ne pas pouvoir caser la région de Moab qui m'intrigue tellement mais comme nous avons une semaine réservée à la Speedweek, cela est impossible.
J'ai déjà repéré tous les hôtels pour chaque destination, j'attends encore quelques jours avant de me lancer dans la résa des billets d'avions + nuits d'hôtel.
J'ai essayé de ne pas dépasser les 4h de route quotidienne maxi, sauf pour rejoindre Bonneville Salt Flats et revenir sur Las Vegas avant le départ.

Ha ça, pour potasser, j'ai passé la plupart de mes soirées depuis 3 mois à lire et relire les carnets de voyage + ouestusa et d'autres sites encore !!! 😄 une vraie drogue !
J'ai bien pensé aussi repartir de Salt Lake City mais je n'arrive pas à savoir si des frais d'abandon sont appliqués entre la Californie et l'Utah et surtout quel serait le montant ? Alors qu'entre la Californie et le Nevada, si j'ai bien compris il n'y en a pas.
Pour la route depuis Bryce jusqu'à Wendover, effectivement cela fait 600 km et nous pensions partir de Bryce vers 12h, peut être vaudrait il mieux s'arrêter dormir avant Wendover, question de prudence.
C'est vrai, bien vu. 🙂 Des frais d'abandon avec l'Utah, il y en aura, mais à mettre dans la balance avec le temps de trajet. Il faut faire des simulations sur différents sites, pour connaître le montant. Vous pourriez éventuellement faire une boucle depuis Salt Lake City aussi, en passant par Moab, MV, Page, GC, LV, puis en remontant par Bryce et Capitol Reef vers Wendover. Et si vous tenez à San Francisco, à la limite, prendre un vol intérieur Las Vegas-SF, pas cher du tout. A vous de voir si vous tenez à Yosemite (mais vu le peu de temps que vous y passez...)

Je suppose donc que San Francisco est important...
Ceci dit, tu peux envisager un vol entre SF et Las Vegas pour gagner des jours dans les parcs (bien sur au détriment de Yosemite et Death Valley, à toi de voir). C'est environ 100 euros / personne et tu gagnes 3 jours de location de voiture.
Sinon, comme je trouve que tu vas avoir peu de temps à Bryce et que la route jusqu'à Wendover est longue, tu pourrais inverser ton trajet:
LV - Bryce - Page - Grand Canyon - MV - Torrey.
C'est le même nombre de miles mais tu as 1h de moins pour rejoindre Bonneville Salt Flats 🙂 Et tu peux rester à Bryce plus tard car tu n'as que 3h de route jusqu'à Page 😉
Si tu perds la loterie The Wave, pense à CBS et White Pocket, c'est splendide !!!
Par contre, il faut réserver un guide car ce parc n'est pas vraiment accessible à moins d'être un pro du 4x4 et d'en avoir eu un bon chez le loueur.

Pour le J4, effectivement Lee Vining serait plus raisonnable mais le Virginia Creek Settlement à Bridgeport aperçu dans les carnetsde cendryon et "JF" max68 me tente beaucoup pour passer la nuit, alors 25 miles de plus...ça devrait le faire, non ? Mais je note toutefois ta remarque 🙂
J11, je pensais simplement passer par la route 95, je ne savais pas qu'il y avait une solution ferry. Quels avantages avec cette solution ?
J13, comme me l'a déjà suggéré Virginath, je pense que l'on va couper le trajet en 2, vu que nous devons vraiment être à Wendover le vendredi dans la journée.
Et pour Valley of Fire, je l'ai mis dans un coin de ma tête au cas où on l'on repartirait de Bonneville plus tôt, selon les dates qui seront fixées pour nos motos.
Oui SF est une des étapes obligatoires, nous ne sommes pas très "ville" mais celle-ci nous attire énormément ! Ainsi que Death Valley !

Pour CBS et White Pocket, j'ai bien évidemment vu et lu les randos avec les Dodson, ça a l'air génial mais pas donné, il va falloir faire des choix budgétaires 🤪 J'avais pensé faire Cathedral Wash et Lee's Ferry en cas de malchance pour the Wave, on verra bien.
Passer par le ferry allonge la journée de route 6/7h plus les stops, attention aux horaires de traversée http://www.canyon-country.com/lakepowell/ferry.htm il faut appeler ils ne les donnent plus sur le site.
Mais cela offre quelques vues sympas du Laked Powell, puis te donne deux possibilités pour rejoindre Torrey :

Au mois de juillet/août tu auras beaucoup de mal à trouver pour moins de 1000€, même dans un mois ou deux 😕. Faut pas rêver, les billets d'avion ne vont pas baisser, je penserais même qu'ils vont augmenter. (je regarde de temps en temps les prix pour l'année prochaine depuis août dernier, et ils n'ont pas arrêté d'augmenter depuis même si c'est de façon minime)

Bonjour, ça me parait complètement possible mais j'ai l'impression que les prix de cette année sont tout de même plus élevés. Je m'explique:
J'ai fais pas mal de simulations fin 2009/début 2010 pour juin 2010 (pour avoir une idée)et je fais les mêmes, cette fois, pour les vrais dates de mon voyage et résultat:
Fin 2009 pour une simu juin 2010= entre 700€ et 800€ pour vols directs PAR>LA + SFO>PAR
Fin 2010 pour une simu juin 2011= entre 870€ et 900€ pour les mêmes vols.
Les prix sont plus élevés pour exactement les mêmes conditions. J'espère que ça va encore descendre 🙁

Si +15%/an c'est le cout de la vie, profitons-en car en 2020 les billets seront à 3500€! Et si on considère qu'un billet= un SMIC en 2010, je doute trèèèèès fortement que le SMIC soit à 3500€ en 2020 (sinon ils ont intérêt à me faire des sacrées augmentations mes patrons! 😉)
Pour les mêmes vols avec correspondances, c'est aujourd'hui à 620€ alors que l'année dernière à la même période, ils étaient à - de 550€ (+12%)
J'ai constaté la même chose pour les loc de voitures, 2 semaines en Mustang à 500€ en 2009 et 680€ aujourd'hui!
Je dirais que comme n'importe quel entreprise, ça varie et que les carburants, les taxes, le dollar et bien sur le bénef sont pour beaucoup dans ces grosses augmentations.
Je pense également que tu as raison en ce qui concerne les tarifs pour les billets d'avion, malheureusement cela augmente considérablement le budget du voyage 🤪

Il manque d'après moi une journée à Yosemite. Si vous pouviez y caser une nuit... 😕 Faire San Francisco - Yosemite - Tioga Pass - Bridgeport me semble un poil ambitieux.
Peut-être supprimer la partie comprise entre le 9 août et le 10 août? Je sais, je te supprime des régions superbes 😕 mais bon...
Et donc faire: SF - Yosemite - Death Valley - Vegas - Gran Canyon - Monument Valley - Page - Bryce - Bonneville Salt Flats - Vegas

Pour Yosemite, en fait nous n'avons prévu que la visite des sequoias à Tuolumne Grove et la traversée de la Tioga Pass Road. Je sais que c'est dommage de ne pas aller dans la vallée mais tout ce que j'ai lu sur le monde incroyable dans ce parc ne me motive pas à faire des bains de foule !
Mais promis, je réfléchis encore à tout ça et en décembre je me lance dans les résas 🙂

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.
I’m currently putting together my day-by-day roadbook and having some trouble planning certain days, like in LA or Las Vegas. Choosing hikes isn’t easy either—it’s tough to decide!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:

- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.
We found Emmanuelle and Isabelle, and wow, they were fantastic. It was just the two of us with them, so it was a truly VIP, ultra-personalized experience. We loved it so much that we’re already planning to come back next year to explore other areas with them. I think we’ve caught the American West bug—it’s all we can think about, and we can’t wait to return.
