Where to go in Greece with a child (3 years old): which island and accommodation?

Hi there, I’m planning a trip to Greece this summer with my 3-year-old son. I recently separated, and we were originally supposed to go on a road trip to Brazil, so I’m now forced to find a Plan B. I’m usually a backpacker who travels with just my backpack, but with my son, I’ll have to opt for all-inclusive hotel packages. I don’t feel ready yet to go backpacking alone with him at the other end of the world. When he’s 5, it’ll be easier :)

Anyway, with so many options for Greece, I’m a bit overwhelmed. There are so many islands and resorts. Do you have an island to recommend? And more specifically, a hotel?

We’re looking at the first two weeks of August.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Thomas,

There are few islands with all-inclusive hotels. In any case, there aren’t any in the Cyclades. You’ll find all-inclusive options on islands like Corfu, Rhodes, and Kos, as well as in Crete. However, keep in mind that these are large resorts that aren’t very pleasant—full of foreigners and international food. Your son will probably have a blast since there’ll be other kids, but for you, as a traveler, it won’t be much fun!

Just so you know, you can find smaller, family-run places with a pool and half-board, for example, without it being a huge resort. You can also eat at nice restaurants instead of dining at the hotel. It also depends on where you’re coming from, your budget, and whether you’re willing to take a boat with your son or prefer a direct flight to an island—which is totally doable for the larger islands I mentioned. That said, early August is going to be pricey!

Greece isn’t the end of the world either—we’re still in Europe :-) Plus, Greeks ADORE kids!

Hi there,

With our kids, we chose the island of Lefkada for simplicity because there’s no need to take a ferry—there’s a bridge connecting it to the mainland. Plus, most car rental companies won’t allow their vehicles to be taken on a ferry. Lefkada doesn’t have big hotel complexes either, but there are plenty of activities to do. I wrote about our experience here: our stay in Lefkada.

It was also easier for us to go there after visiting Olympia and heading up to Meteora. Check out our 12-day Greece itinerary here.

Hi, As mentioned earlier, there aren’t many all-inclusive options in Greece. But you’ll definitely find a hotel with dinner included via Booking. If not, no worries—just head out early to a restaurant with your little one. Greeks are incredibly welcoming to kids and will help make sure your little one has a blast! One island frequently visited by families is Paros (because depending on the destination, there are direct flights in high season, I think). On my blog, you’ll find testimonials and accommodations tested by families. For a 15-day trip, maybe consider adding 1 or 2 more islands to satisfy your sense of adventure.
