Why not explore Brazil by camper van?

Hi,

After reading tons of posts, blogs, and travel journals... there’s almost nothing about exploring Brazil by camper van. All the RTW (round-the-world) trips seem to skip this country. So why? Safety seems to be the main (and only?) reason. But we cross Pakistan, for example. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. PS: If you’ve got any links about this destination by camper van, I’d love to check them out.

Hi Didier, A good question with a simple primary answer: 'safety'! When I still lived in Europe, I always traveled (for about 20 years) in a camper van/motorhome doing 'wild camping,' mostly in the Pyrenees (which I know like the back of my hand) but also in many remote spots in Spain. Here in Brazil (where I’ve lived for about fifteen years), it’s a completely different story... First, you hardly find any camper vans. Then, back to the safety issue... wild camping isn’t done just anywhere because you might get 'surprise visitors' at night. There are also very few campsites. So, I’m getting back into it little by little, but not in a camper van—I prefer going in a 4x4 (adapted for the purpose), which lets me reach really remote mountain spots where safety risks are low (at least if you speak Portuguese). But every now and then, I see some foreigners giving it a try (mostly Dutch folks and occasionally French travelers) using their own vehicles, and they mostly come back with positive experiences. Rentals here are very hard to find. In conclusion, is it possible? Yes. Is there potential? A huge amount. Main condition? Being able to speak Portuguese. hi We traveled by camper van through all the countries in South America, including Brazil. There are some amazing places, like the Pantanal. The east coast is more interesting than the center. Of course, you always have to be careful where you park and not hang around too much in big cities. But we didn’t regret our trip to this country, and our stay in the Amazon, on a barge, remains one of our best memories. More details on my blog: http://destinationlesameriques.uniterre.com under the Brazil section. But given the current situation and the president, I’m not sure I’d still want to go back. cheers M

Hi,

We’ve traveled through Brazil with our own 4x4 vehicle and rooftop tent for the first time, then later with a pickup and camper, and even by motorcycle on the trails.

Sure, as someone mentioned, you need to be careful, and a camper van definitely draws more attention. But we never had any problems. Most difficulties tend to pop up around big cities or highly touristy areas. In extreme cases, when we needed to find safe spots to camp in certain cities, we asked the police, who always helped us out—sometimes even letting us park at their station. In small villages, locals often offer solutions when you ask around.

If we ever found ourselves stuck as night approached, our backup plan was truck stops at big gas stations where truckers sleep, though those can be noisy. Another backup option is the monitored parking lots at major city airports. That said, I’d avoid driving at night if possible.

For us, the experience was really positive, and if we ever return to South America, we’d definitely go back to Brazil.

Yvan, Once again, Brazil isn’t just the state of Bahia. If you want camper vans, come to the south—you’ll see them there. But of course, always stay cautious.

I agree, it’s really a safety concern. Personally, I go wild camping with my fitted-out 4x4 in places I know, and because it’s a 4x4, you can venture farther from civilization and feel much more at ease. When it comes to rentals, it’s the same old story: you’ll find them in the south, but not here in the Northeast. Still, I’ve seen Facebook groups for camper van enthusiasts in Brazil that are growing, with some really interesting contributions. Tropical greetings from Salvador, @IvanBahiaGuide

Hi Ivan, We’re planning a long-term road trip in a camper van starting from French Guiana and following the entire Brazilian coast. Despite searching on Facebook, I can’t seem to find the traveler groups you mentioned. Could you share the names of those groups, please? Thanks, Nadine

Hey Lomic, You just need to search with the right keywords ;-) Here are a few examples: https://www.facebook.com/groups/289064090225538/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/808349047702211/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/1429247690669694/ Sure, these are Brazilian groups and in Portuguese, but these days with automatic translators... You’ll find plenty of info there. Tropical greetings from Salvador, Ivan Bahia
