hi there I’d love to get some opinions—I’ve never used Airbnb before. They’re offering a key handover via lockbox. Any tips or advice? Is it reliable? Best,

Hi Sebastien

It’s pretty reliable—just check the reviews to make sure there aren’t too many issues with finding the key lockbox. The upside is you can manage your own arrival time. On the other hand, when it comes to friendliness, chatting with a lockbox is pretty limited…

Yeah, I’ve used this system several times abroad. Super convenient for the host, who often doesn’t live on-site or is at work. The first time was in Montreal. Then Lisbon, then Stockholm. Never in France. The lockboxes usually work with a code.

Hi there, I can confirm I’ve come across this system in lots of countries, including with Booking.com—it’s called "self check-in." Super handy when you arrive at a time your host can’t be there, or if they live far away. Shortly before your arrival, your host sends you the lockbox code. When you leave, you just put the key back in the box. The weirdest one I had was in Chambéry—the box was attached to a balcony railing with a motorcycle "U" lock! Just Google "boîte à clés" and you’ll see what they look like.
