hi there,

We’re heading to southern England this summer in our camper van, including a stop in London.

Does anyone have a good experience with a campsite near London that has easy access to public transport to get into the city center? Ideally, we’d like to leave the camper van at the campsite...

Thanks so much in advance for your help!

Hello, If you're looking for a campsite, there are two in Canterbury with a rail link to London. I recommend the one from the Camping and Caravanning Club, which is on a bus route to the city center and the train station. For a motorhome, I’d advise booking to be sure of finding a spot. I’ve been going there regularly since 1993. Happy travels!

I went to Lee Valley because Abbey Wood was full (in summer without a reservation). It’s really nice, and the bus goes through the campsite and then connects to the metro.

But you should count on about 1 hour of public transport to reach the center.

There’s the cheaper option of parking lots (paid and guarded) in Windsor, then taking the train (about 45 minutes, but it’s far so it’s expensive). I slept there for the Windsor visit (but I didn’t test the train to London)

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your replies.

Some of the campsites mentioned are in London’s "low emission zone," and since I’m driving an older diesel motorhome, I’d rather avoid that.

So I found this one: Chertsey Camping and Caravanning Club site, near Windsor.

We’ll see if it was a good choice!

Hello,

Your post is a bit old, but COVID happened in the meantime!!! Did you end up going to that campsite? What did you think of it? Did you go to London from that campsite? If so, how do you make the trip (bus, tube)? How long does the journey take? Thanks for your feedback.

This post was made some time ago, but I’m adding a few extra details here that might help future travelers.

From the Chertsey Camping and Caravanning Club Site, the easiest way to get to central London is by train.

Walk or take a taxi to Chertsey station (about 20 minutes).

Take a direct train to London Waterloo.

Journey takes around 1 hour.

Once at Waterloo, you’re already in the heart of London and can easily hop on the Tube or walk to Westminster, Soho, Covent Garden, etc.

You can pay with a contactless bank card or an Oyster Card.
