Mauritius or Guadeloupe in July/August

Hi everyone,

We’re a couple with an 8-year-old daughter, and we’d love to head to the islands this summer (late July to early August) for 15 days to enjoy the beaches, beautiful landscapes, snorkeling, and see sea turtles.

We’re torn between Mauritius and Guadeloupe (where we went about ten years ago as a "just the two of us" couple).

We’ve read a few things about both destinations: - About Mauritius: July and August are during the southern winter, so temperatures are cooler, and the water isn’t always very warm (it’s all relative, though!). On the east coast, it can be quite windy and therefore cooler. - About Guadeloupe: July and August are the rainy season, but the rain is mostly at night and in the morning. That means warm, sunny days with nice warm water!

Of course, it’s impossible to predict the weather six months in advance, but we’d love to hear your thoughts on these destinations.

Thanks in advance for your feedback,

Gaëlle and Laurent (and Emma!)

Hi there,

The choice is an easy one.

As you mentioned, in Guadeloupe, it's the rainy season, known as "hivernage." It's hot and humid, even stifling. The ocean will be rough, leading to turbidity, which isn’t ideal for snorkeling.

In Mauritius, while rain is relatively common year-round in the form of short, heavy thunderstorms, there’s a noticeable drop during the southern winter when temperatures are milder. Don’t forget we’re in the tropics, so it only cools down at night. In July-August, the average sea temperature is 22/23°C (compared to 28°C in Guadeloupe). It’s all relative, as you said

Good evening, Regarding the climate, I can't really say, as I haven’t traveled there during that period. However, I really wasn’t impressed by Mauritius—I didn’t find the beaches all that beautiful, the snorkeling was extremely disappointing, the landscapes were nice but maybe we expected too much, and the roadsides were dirty almost everywhere. In short, we were disappointed. We regretted not going to Rodrigues instead.

I find the French West Indies more beautiful, and maybe you could consider Martinique instead of Guadeloupe for a change. The landscapes we preferred had lusher vegetation, magnificent beaches with more variety, and some really beautiful snorkeling spots that are fairly easy to access. There are also plenty of hiking options...

Well, to each their own... but that’s my take!

I totally agree about Rodrigues! 🙂 We regretted only staying there for a week—says it all!

It’s almost reassuring to see we’re not the only ones with a kinda meh opinion about a country that otherwise has an excellent reputation for tourism. At one point, we wondered if we were aliens or something. But it was probably our most disappointing trip. Even though we had great conditions. Maybe because our expectations were too high based on what we’d read and seen.

I haven’t compared airfares yet, but how about the Malaysian islands (should be cheaper than Mauritius)? For example, the Perhentian Islands (flight via Kuala Lumpur) or Indonesian ones? Bali? (Nusa Ceningan, Nusa Lembongan) Lombok? The weather is perfect in July. Or Zanzibar in July—it’s peak dry season.

Between Mauritius and Réunion, I’d go for Réunion even though there are fewer swimmable beaches—they do exist. And the island’s interior is way more stunning than Mauritius. Plus, in Réunion, you can see turtles in Saint-Leu (Kelonia). I’d avoid the Caribbean in summer, especially because of the water quality (rough seas).
