Hi everyone! We’re so excited to be heading to Italy for the first time this April with our two kids for a week. We’ve booked our round-trip flight, and we’ll be arriving and departing from Pisa. Our rough plan so far includes visiting Pisa, taking the train to Florence, and exploring the Cinque Terre. Last night, a friend also suggested adding Siena to the list. Our kids are 12 and 9 and are used to walking, but we’re not looking to rush around too much. We’d love any advice, especially about accommodation. Should we stay in Pisa and take day trips by train, or split our nights between a couple of different places? We’re just starting our research, so any tips would be amazing! 😉 Thanks in advance!

I’m traveling solo by plane to Catania in May and plan to hike the northern side of Etna, starting from Linguaglossa where I’ll arrive by bus. After that, I’d love some info on how to get up to Piano Provenzana (shuttles or hitchhiking), since it seems there’s no public transport except in the summer. Can you sleep there in a free or cheap refuge, or camp? And how far up can you go without having to hire a guide? Thanks in advance. Bernard.

Claudio (still from Faverges) dreaming about a cycling getaway in Italy from Faverges (train all the way to Turin) from Turin down to Venice along the Po River and back via the Padana (Alta Italia da attraversare – Northern Italy to cross) The tricky part is getting from Chioggia to Venice. I read it’s possible by hopping on a boat from island to island, but it sounds a bit stressful. Has anyone already tackled this route?

I'm starting a new travel journal in Italy. It's about a month-long trip (from September 3, 2025, to October 4, 2025), or rather a part of it. This section matches the title: an opera festival in Verona (one evening) and the Dolomites in the Veneto region. I'm posting the part of the trip I think will interest French-speaking readers the most (since this is where I saw the most French travelers). Here’s a quick summary: - Trip in September 2025 - Solo travel with camping (caravan) - Small geographic area: besides Verona, the surroundings of the Marmolada massif and Cortina d'Ampezzo. - Main but not exclusive activity: hiking.

Day 1: Thursday, September 4, 2025

I arrived in Veneto under the sun and with warm weather. I drove to Verona and tried to find a spot at the campsite (Verona Village) located south of the city. Unfortunately, it was full. Booking on the website was mandatory, but when I tried to reserve a few days ago, the site never moved from the "reservation" step to the "payment" step (I don’t know why—it’s always like that in these cases). I found another solution over the phone; the drive from southern Verona to the northeast was a bit long, but I finally settled at the "Oro Verde" campsite. It’s an "agricampeggio" (farm camping or rural campsite) on the outskirts of the city, and its name (green gold) suggests they produce olives there. Since it wasn’t late, I biked to the Adige River, following the recommended route into the city.

I just got back from Sardinia 2 and wanted to share my little recap with you. It’s a stunning country, and the people are so welcoming. We were lucky to see it at the end of April—I wouldn’t go in July or August because it gets overcrowded and loses its charm!!! SARDINIA 2: 10 days

-Departure from Geneva to Olbia on Friday, 04/12/24 with EasyJet: 1h30 flight -Return from Cagliari to Geneva on Sunday, 04/21/24 with EasyJet: 1h40 flight (Round-trip price: 314 €) -Car rental with Locauto: 250 €, including 51 € for "full" insurance + 87 € (drop-off at a different airport) -Accommodation every night via Booking 13: room + kitchen *OLBIA: Arrival at the airport… wasted time at Locauto because there was only one person at the desk (you can check in online and send the driver’s license and ID, but it was impossible to do!) Headed to our lodging. *COSTA SMERALDA: The part we liked the least… everything feels artificial since the billionaires moved in (Porto Rotondo, Porto Cervo, Baia di Sardinia). We regret not stopping at Golfo Aranci to see its underwater art museum, Mumart. *ARZACHENA and its archaeological park (Tomba dei Giganti: Coddu Ecchju, Li Muri, Nuraghe la Prisgiona) to see in beautiful nature. Coastal road toward Palau (lagoons with lots of birds). *PALAU: Ferries to La Maddalena Island every 15/30 minutes (37 € for 2 people + 1 car). *** La Maddalena is part of an archipelago with 7 large islands and small islets… absolutely stunning… views of Corsica! *** -La Maddalena: A charming little town with narrow streets. -Follow the scenic coastal road that loops around the island for 21 km (gorgeous). -On the east side of the island, take a 600m bridge to Caprera Island (lots of great hiking trails). -Lots of beaches with granite rocks and wild coves. -Return by ferry to Palau. *SANTA TERESA GALLURA: Departure for Bonifacio 2, 4 km to Capo Testa (cape with a lighthouse… granite rocks). Here, there were Roman quarries. *Drive down a beautiful road along the Costa Paradiso (red trachyte). *CASTELSARDO: A fortified hilltop town worth seeing. *PORTO TORRES: Visit the Basilica San Gavino. *STINTINO and its beaches, including La Pelosa with its Genoese tower… too crowded for us! *Viewpoint at Capo Falcone with a view of Parco dell’Asinara (we didn’t have time to go, but it’s a must). *Drive down to Argentiera via small coastal roads (old lead, zinc, and silver mines). A "ghost town" with a museum that’s apparently only open on weekends at this time of year. *Small road (with stunning sea views) toward Grotta di Nettuno (you get there by a long staircase, but it was too windy and closed!). Capo Caccia. *Drive down (along lagoons with birds, including pink flamingos) toward Alghero (historic center: ramparts, bell tower, churches). The city of coral and lobsters! *Drive along the sea to Bosa, a colorful little town (Malvasia vineyards) between the Temo River and the sea. *Road to Montiferru Castle on a volcanic massif—ruins of the castle with a beautiful panorama of rolling hills (cork oak forests, chestnut trees, oaks) and cultivated plots. *** Cuglieri: Olive oil museum *** *Santa Caterina di Pittinuri, S’Archittu (many beaches with limestone cliffs) (many archaeological sites). *SINIS PENINSULA: Cabras and its lagoons with lots of pink flamingos. Archaeological museum with its Nuragic giants. *Archaeological site of Tharros. *ORISTANO: Not much visited, but it has some beautiful buildings. A traditional Sardinian pastry shop—an absolute delight (DELIGIA, Via Figoli 61). *Road surrounded by marshes, along the coast with beautiful little beaches. *Arrival at Costa Verde: The Piscinas dunes and beaches are stunning. Miniera Montevecchio and the surrounding old mines (Iglesiente road) (Naracauli, Ingurtosu). *** Near Guspini, in the mountains, visit the village of Arbus, where many Sardinian knife makers are based. But make the detour to meet Paolo Pusceddu, the master knife maker who opens his workshop and created the *Museo del Coltello Sardo* Via Roma, 15 · +39 349 053 7765. Absolutely fascinating and super interesting… he also sells his knives at very reasonable prices. *Masua (mines) then Pan di Zucchero. *Porto Flavia: Transport of minerals from a port carved into the cliff with two 600m tunnels… the visit is a must. *IGLESIAS: Worth visiting. *ISOLA DI SANT’ANTIOCO: A bridge connects it to Sardinia 2. Drive around the island via small roads. Calasetta (white and blue houses), Nido del Passeri, Cala Lunga, Capo Sperone, Turri. Beautiful beaches and stunning views. *Road to Teulada, then Chia (see the small road from Chia to Tuerredda). *PULA: Archaeological site of Nora. *CAPOTERRA: We ended our trip with a night at an agriturismo in the middle of olive groves, "Azienda Agricola Corte degli Ulivi" (Pixina Sa Murta, Marco: +39 347 246 2361). Unforgettable welcome, eco-friendly place (wooden house with water and electricity self-sufficiency). *Cagliari airport. In total, 1000 km, and we still didn’t finish exploring (the area south of Olbia and the interior are still on the list). The Sardinians are very welcoming. Sardinia 2 is diverse (beaches, countryside, towns, archaeological sites…). We were lucky to visit at the end of April—summer must be awful with the heat and tourist crowds! Easy to visit with kids.

We're planning to visit Lake Garda from August 10th to 24th with our 4-year-old daughter. We’d stay for 15 days. We’ll be arriving at Verona Airport. We don’t know the area at all. We were thinking of staying near Malcesine. Do you think we should plan for two accommodations to explore the lake? We’d prefer to avoid crowded spots, even though I suspect it might be tricky in August. If you have any great tips or recommendations within a budget of up to 150 € per night, that would be amazing! Do you think a car is essential, or can the lake be easily explored by ferry and bus? For a 15-day stay, would you recommend staying around Lake Garda or visiting one or more other lakes as well? We’re looking for activities suitable for our 4-year-old daughter.

Hi everyone! I’m putting together our travel itinerary for Veneto at the end of April. And the more I look and research potential sites to visit, the more I find! We’ll only be there for a week—my family and I—including 3 days in Venice. So we have to make some choices... I plan to rent a car when we arrive in Venice and head straight to Bergamo, which would be our first stop. We’d leave the car at the airport when we return to Venice so we can explore the city at our leisure.

What do you think: 1 night in Bergamo (a 2h15 drive from Venice airport), 1 night in Garda, 1 night in Verona, 1 in Padua, and 3 in Venice—would that be doable?

Hi there, I’d like to spend a week in the Dolomites (4 days of trekking and a few day hikes). Unfortunately, it’ll be in August (no choice). My questions are: - For a first time in the Dolomites, which 4-day trek should I pick? I’d love the most spectacular and varied landscapes possible. Around 1,000m elevation gain per day. - Is it busier the first or last week of August? - Will it still feel "quiet" while hiking? Not like a conga line in August...?

So happy the forum reopened last October!!! I’ve started reading again (posts, travel journals) and chiming in on a few discussions. Now I’m stepping it up by writing a new travel journal—I’ve already posted a few between 2018 and 2020.

My latest trip was to Italy from August 27 to September 26, 2024. As the title says, it was a wander through Tuscany in parts of the region that aren’t the most visited. No Firenze-Siena-Pisa trilogy, no San Gimignano; there’ll be a quick detour into Siena, but I’ll skip the best-known sights. That choice, plus traveling in September, should help dodge overtourism. It worked out—crowds were light, sometimes very light, the whole way. Here’s the practical rundown: - a long trip outside peak season (ah, retirees!) - solo camping (caravan) - a mix of activities (hiking, mountain biking, sightseeing) in places that aren’t always packed with tourists. Still, I don’t feel like I ended up in some hidden-away spots. Not sure if this will draw any readers.

DAY 1: Tuesday, August 27, 2024 The heat was intense on the drive in across the plain; two big storms—more rain and hail than lightning and thunder—threw the weather off, the first near Imola, the second on the four-lane road up the Savio valley. I left the Cesena-Roma four-lane at the Verghereto exit and climbed up to Balze (1,100 meters). The campsite is even higher (1,200 meters), in the forest near the source of the Tevere (Tiber). Staying up here will cut down on driving for the first part of the trip: a route through the Appennino (Apennines) on the border between Toscana and Emilia-Romagna. The temperature was surprisingly mild for the altitude, the air thick with moisture by late afternoon. I drove back down from the campsite to Balze (2 km on the road) to grab groceries (it’s doable) and scout tomorrow’s hike. .

The endpoint of the planned hike is just a few meters from this sign (the trail crosses this road about 3 km from Balze). I realized Balze and the source of the Tevere (Tiber) are actually in Emilia-Romagna, not Toscana. I always thought the Tevere (Tiber), which flows toward Roma (Tyrrhenian side), started in Toscana! I’ll come back to this quirk in Day 3’s write-up.

I'd love some destination suggestions for a road trip from Nice to Livorno by car, including the routes, tolls to cross, distance, and estimated travel time. We're planning a 5-day trip, with 2 nights near Nice, 1 night along the way, and finally 2 nights in Livorno. There are 4 of us in a rental car, and we'd like to stay in either an apartment, a mobile home near the sea, or a campsite. Our budget isn't too extravagant!!!! We want to visit the Promenade des Anglais, and I've heard Menton is really interesting. Once we reach Livorno, we'll take the ferry to Corsica for 12 days with the same rental car. We're planning to leave the last week of May and the first two weeks of June 2026, so around 17-18 days total. Thanks

There have already been quite a few travel journals about Naples, so this is more of a photographic stroll. There aren’t too many practical tips, but feel free to ask! This trip took place in May 2019.

It’s the day before departure, and I’m excited as can be! I’ve wanted to see Naples and its region for a while—this city everyone calls bubbling with life. While I’m packing my bags, I get a message from the airline saying there’s going to be an air traffic controllers’ strike and my flight might not take off... What? How? You’re kidding, right? I’ve been waiting for this trip for weeks. I check online, and yes, it’s true... What to do?!? I look up the train schedule and find out the train leaves a few hours earlier, with a stop in Milan and then straight to Naples. Decision made—I’m taking the train; it’s a new experience. I leave at 5 AM on an almost empty train, arrive in Milan 4.5 hours later, and rush to catch the train to Naples. This is my first time taking the train in Italy, and I love it. After an hour of travel, a gentleman arrives with a small cart and an authentic coffee machine on top. He asks me: *caffè, signora?* Si, si, si! And he starts the machine—here’s my first Italian espresso with little biscuits.



I arrive in Naples in the early afternoon. The station is packed, cars everywhere, and I’m already soaking up the atmosphere. I drop my things off at the B&B and head out to explore the city. There are incredible crowds everywhere, noise, food on every street corner, and every scene is a real photographic delight :) I’m in the Chiaia neighborhood and try my first street pizza, made right in front of me—how can I say it? Excellent. In the late afternoon, I wander through the streets before grabbing an aperitivo on one of the many terraces.









The next day, I head to Capri... It’s true, Capri is very touristy, but it’s worth seeing once in your life. After a choppy crossing, I’ve earned a good shower, a plate of pasta, and a limoncello. Then I set off for a walk through the little streets that go up and down endlessly. The view is stunning, and the kilometers add up... I’ve definitely earned a break by the pool with a gelato :)

- A neighborhood that’s not too noisy - A neighborhood well served by public transport (airport and the city’s main sights) - A neighborhood with restaurants and supermarkets - A neighborhood with relatively reasonable prices

Public transport is essential. We gave this trip as a gift to someone who won’t be able to walk long distances like we usually do.

I also don’t want to be too far from the historic center.

Termini and Monti seem to fit these criteria? Is Termini a bit sketchy? But sketchy like dangerous or sketchy like homeless people just looking for a place to sleep?

We’ll be traveling off-season.

I found the official site, but I don’t understand when it’s possible to make a reservation.

Apparently, it’s 30 days in advance for the underground tour since everything is already booked up for the next 30 days...

But what about the Colosseum + Arena visit? The site shows tickets for the next 7 days, but nothing after that. Are tickets released just a week in advance for this combo, not 30 days?
