Hi there! I’m planning a trip with my wife and our three kids (ages 9, 6, and 3) from April 16 to May 6. I’ve started sketching out the itinerary, trying to alternate between visits, hikes, safaris, and downtime. I want to keep the pace relaxed given the kids’ ages. Could you let me know what you think of this route? I removed Nuwara Eliya, which I had originally planned before Ella, to cut down on stops. I was also wondering if I should break up the Arugam Bay to Colombo leg with an overnight in Galle, since it’s a long drive. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hi there,

For the Wilpattu safari, you don’t need to do an afternoon plus the full day the next day.

Day 7 might be too packed if you’re driving from Trinco and then visiting the Dambulla caves. I’d recommend doing the caves the next day from Sigiriya instead.

Day 10: The Habarana village tours are a bit of a tourist trap. It’s a soulless, inauthentic village where everything is staged—best to avoid.

Lastly, I think it’s a shame not to visit Kandy or break up the drive between Arugam Bay and Colombo. The trip will be long and tiring, so plan a stop along the way. Just so you know, the airport is in Negombo, about an hour north of Colombo (without traffic).

Hope this helps!

Happy planning,

Fabine

Hi there,

Thanks for your replies, Fab.

For the Wilpattu safari, do you think a full day would be enough?

To avoid too many short stops or long drives, I was wondering if it might be better to "sacrifice" my stops: Arugam Bay and Yala, and therefore skip the south/southeast.

Instead, add Kandy and Batticaloa Beach to my route.

Will I regret not doing the south/southeast part?

Thanks a lot, Eric

Hello, I’m still hesitating because some feedback says Yala is still amazing to do…

What do you think?

Hi there, I agree with the other comment about the length of safaris. With a 3-year-old, a full day might be a bit much—though he’ll probably nap for a while! But having to stay quiet all day could get long. We did a half-day in the evening and the next morning at Wilpattu, and it was perfect, even if we didn’t see all the animals we’d hoped for. Especially since you’re doing other safaris in different parks! A safari is always magical, but kids don’t like monotony, and too many safaris can kill the excitement. It’s better if each outing is magical and not too long! Just something to think about! !

Good evening, We’re planning a trip to Sri Lanka from July 20th to August 14th with three kids aged 6, 12, and 15. To fine-tune our itinerary, could you share your feedback on the different stages you experienced—highlighting the pros and cons, whether certain stops felt too short or too long, the sites you visited (and loved or didn’t), and your transportation methods along with their costs? Thanks in advance. Best regards, Frédéric
