Kyushu in summer with kids

Hi everyone, This’ll be our second trip to Japan this summer, after a trip in February 2019 to Tokyo, Kyoto, the Alps, and Kanazawa. We’d planned a hiking, onsen, villages, and volcanoes stay afterward, which was supposed to happen in April 2020, but the COVID crisis forced us to cancel everything, and we’ve been chomping at the bit ever since. In the meantime, we’ve had two kids, who’ll be 4 and 5 next summer. They walk well and eat just about anything. We’re thinking of arriving in Osaka and heading quickly to Kyushu, where we’d stay for 3 weeks. I’m looking for info but mostly finding tips for older kids. So here are a few questions—if you can help: - I get that renting a car would be best, but we’re not planning to do that in Fukuoka. I was thinking of a car-free block in Fukuoka-Beppu (taking the bus for the transfer), then heading farther south by car. - For the kids, if you’ve got tips on places or festivals they might enjoy—or classics to avoid with them... - For hiking, I’d love any advice on 3-4 hour hikes, keeping in mind Aso if it’s calm. Yakushima, if we can swing it and you don’t advise against it. And do you know of an area where we could do a 2-3 day trek (something like the Kumano Kodo)? - I know it’ll be hot, but I’m struggling to gauge if it’s worse than Southeast Asia, for example. We’re not planning to go to Tokyo in the middle of summer, but I’d like to know if it’ll be really tough with the kids—especially in Fukuoka. Just wanted to thank all the forum contributors, including those who might not have answers for me. Your posts have been a huge help and inspiration over the years. Pierre-Yves

Hi there, I live in Fukuoka and know Kyushu inside out—I’d be happy to help! I also have kids the same age as yours (3 and 5), so feel free to ask me any practical questions.

- I understand it’s better to rent a car. But we’re not planning to do that in Fukuoka. I was thinking of doing a car-free block: Fukuoka to Beppu (by bus for the transfer), then heading further south by car.

A car will actually be more of a hassle in Fukuoka and Beppu. The best option is to rent one for a loop like Beppu - Kurokawa Onsen - Aso - Taketa - Beppu.

For the kids, if you have any tips on places or festivals they might enjoy—or classics to avoid with them...

It depends on whether you’re coming in July or August. I can give you more details once you’ve confirmed your dates.

- For hiking, I’m open to any advice on 3-4 hour hikes, especially since I’ve noted Aso if it’s quiet. Yakushima, if we can and if you don’t advise against it. And do you know of an area where we could hike for two or three days (something like the Kumano Kodo)?

Mount Aso is a great choice. You might also consider hiking around Ureshino Onsen and the other "OLLE" trails. Just be mindful of the heat, though.

- I know it’ll be hot, but I’m struggling to gauge if it’s worse than Southeast Asia, for example. We’re not planning to go to Tokyo in the middle of summer, but I’d like to know if it’ll be really tough with kids—especially in Fukuoka.

Fukuoka is a coastal city with a lot of wind. Yes, it’s hot, but the breeze makes it more bearable than inland areas (watch out for places like Hita, for example). Make sure to pack: mini-fans, hats, parasols, cooling neck wraps, plenty of water, and take breaks in air-conditioned spots. One thing that works really well with young kids is water play. This summer, I guided families to different water play spots in Fukuoka, and everyone loved it.

Don’t hesitate if you have any other questions.

Hi,

I recommend checking out the Japan National Tourism Organization website; search for "JNTO".

Best regards,

Hi there, and thanks for your reply—it really helped us refine our initial plans. I also checked out your site with a lot of interest; it’s already super inspiring. I could stop here, but if I may keep taking advantage of your kindness with some more specific questions, here they are.

We booked our tickets with EVA. We arrive directly in Fukuoka on the morning of July 14th and leave on the evening of August 11th, so 28 days in total. Roughly, here’s how we’re seeing it: Fukuoka: 3 days Yakushima: 5 days Kagoshima and Kirishima Park: 4 days Kumamoto and Aso: 4 days Kuju Mountains and Kurokawa Onsen: 4 days Beppu, Yufuin, and Kunisaki Peninsula: 4 days Fukuoka: 3 days We’ll rent a car in Yakushima, then again from Kagoshima until the end around Beppu.

1. Does this pacing seem doable? 2. We arrive in Fukuoka on the last day of the festival. It wasn’t intentional. Should we absolutely try to make the most of it? And, as I was already wondering, are there any other festivals worth catching during this period? 3. By doing it this way, we won’t be heading to Nagasaki or Miyazaki and the east coast—is that a bad idea? 4. With kids aged 4 and 5, will it be tough to find reasonably priced accommodations with two rooms, or is it generally expected to all sleep together side by side anyway? 5. Before they came along, we really enjoyed spending a romantic night in a slightly upscale ryokan with a nice meal. Is it okay to bring two little ones, or is it frowned upon? (I’m sure the staff would be polite, but we don’t want to disturb anyone—they’re not particularly noisy, just kids.)

Thanks again for the care you put into your response, Pierre-Yves
