Messages disappearing

I’m reporting to VF that my message count dropped from around 5,160 to 5,090 over the last three days.

Is there now an issue with the message count, an unintended disappearance, or some kind of pruning?

I’m asking because I haven’t received any info about this.

I don't know if that's the reason in this case, but it happens when the author of travel journals you've contributed to deletes them.
JO Jojoone1 Globetrotter ·
Yes, but I doubted I’d posted dozens of messages on just one user’s travel journals. In the meantime, an idea occurred to me. Indeed, all of Michant’s incredibly enriching travel journals have disappeared. I don’t know when this new whim hit them, but that could be it. Maybe several people did the same after their eighth vaccine reminder...
VO VoyageForum Globetrotter ·
Let's be clear: we don't delete your messages unless you're insulting each other. Thanks for reporting, we'll look into it.

Michant deleted the travel journals published under this username a long time ago, right?

As for the most recent ones, they're still there.
JO Jojoone1 Globetrotter ·
Well, I give up. Maybe VoyageForum can shed some light on this later...

In a discussion, when you click on the number of messages (under the photo or username) of a participant, it takes you to a list labeled "search results".

The result that appears should be similar... but in every case, it shows a number of messages that’s higher or lower than before.

Jojoone1: 5098 messages -> search results 5093 Voyajou: 8483 messages -> search results 8485 Attila: 3361 messages -> search results 3370 Kola: 6911 messages -> search results 6912

Maybe there’s a trash bin on VF that hasn’t been emptied... or a purgatory. 🤪

The mystery deepens :)

Let's do this: have you noticed any messages you posted that have disappeared?

Have you noticed any posts you made that have disappeared?

Since I signed up on VF? Yeah, tons... but you weren’t around yet. Since the site reopened? No idea. Doesn’t matter, and that wasn’t my point anyway.

In this thread, I was just pointing out a little oddity that’s been around for a while.

Hello,

YES,

In the Cruises section, I posted the same question three times (as a new thread), and none of them got any replies. The first two disappeared, and I don’t know about the third one—but I still didn’t get any answers. ???

Best regards,

Puma2A

After checking to be sure, I can’t find the third message either... ?? I didn’t insult anyone in any of those three posts....

Hi there,

For my part, I remember very well a rather long and detailed post written and shared from Amsterdam Schiphol about how the airport’s new system works—it disappeared. It was written in spring 2025 during a stay at the Crown Lounge. We’d exchanged emails about it on October 24, 2025, off-site, but as far as I know, that mysterious post never resurfaced. In any case, I can’t find it again. I think there were a few bugs, errors, or glitches at the time.

Open threads that didn’t receive any replies used to be removed after a certain period of time.

I don’t know if the programming done by François Boucher handled this automatically or if there was human intervention.

In the first case, this could explain the disappearance of the threads.
VO VoyageForum Globetrotter ·
Yes, this programming issue is still happening. We’re currently working on finding a solution so no post goes unanswered.

In the Destinations or Themes sections, maybe, but not in the Between Two Trips forum (books, music, food, etc.). 🙂

We're currently working on finding a solution so that no post goes unanswered.

By asking Claude to fill in the gaps left by imperfect humans, who have been the forum's only fuel so far... but who are turning away because they find answers, solutions, and ready-made itineraries elsewhere. Without needing to exchange. Without taking the time (or the pleasure) to ask?
JO Jojoone1 Globetrotter ·
Oh yes, and soon the nostalgia of a few playful exchanges... it's ironic, really!
VO VoyageForum Globetrotter ·
No, we're not going to ask Claude.

No, we’re not going to ask Claude.

Good news! But to keep it from spreading across the forum, slowly nibbling away at its sections and its soul, we’ll need to make sure the forum’s vital forces—and its reserves (temporarily?) dormant—don’t fade away. We might even need to reactivate them. What forms the foundation, what makes it rich, what gives it (here I hesitate between present and past tense) its vitality—namely, those imperfect humans... that heterogeneous mix of stories and geographies, ages, cultures, (strong) personalities, sensitivities, reflections, and different life paths (the list isn’t exhaustive), all gathered around a common interest: travel (but not just that).

Building (or preserving, since they already exist) coherent bridges, not letting this space turn into a battlefield where the only outcomes are victory or defeat...

Even if it bothers you, annoys you, or doesn’t interest you—as your reactions to the photo contest psychodrama showed. A discussion where it would’ve been wiser to simply explain the reason for the deletion, whatever it was (one or more offended reports, compliance with Google, Meta, or other editorial policies).

Explaining isn’t surrendering or negotiating. It’s owning a decision—good or bad, that’s not the point—justified by the position you hold and the responsibilities that come with it. It’s accepting discussion, including pushback, while keeping control... and avoiding suspicions, fantasies, tantrums, and the chaotic nonsense that drowns out reason and wisdom.

Authority often comes out of it legitimized, respected, strengthened.

Unless you remove the human element from the equation, you’ll never prevent excesses, irony, even sarcasm, feelings of injustice, deep-seated animosities that explain the fangs always bared in certain exchanges (and honestly, it’s not what it used to be ).

What gives VF its strength, its life, its vibrancy, are the differences that clash, the collisions of viewpoints, the disagreements that sometimes find common ground.

Kate, Attila, others... (what a bunch of chicks, right?) have said it elsewhere, differently.

You’ve often mentioned the technical complexity of this site, and maybe you’re not out of the woods yet. But given that—and it’s not minimized, as some concerned posts show (bug reports, offers to help, ideas to revitalize the site...)—unless your goal is to refocus VF on travel journals and factual info while cutting back on side sections and interactivity, you might not be able to avoid a more... embodied presence.
