My husband and I dream of going on Umrah or to Mecca in a camper van.

Can anyone give me some info on this? Thanks! 😉

Regarding this trip, it's important to know that the holy sites are strictly off-limits to non-Muslims. Women can't drive vehicles and aren't allowed to go shopping or take a walk alone. They must bathe while dressed and wear the abaya in public. Customs are particularly strict and enjoy thoroughly searching everything, looking for prohibited items like alcohol, non-halal food, magazines, or photos that might show a woman's uncovered legs, etc. At the entrance and exit of every town, there's always a meticulous police checkpoint asking for travel permits. Finally, it's very hot, and the way Saudis drive can be quite surprising and dangerous. I've lived in several countries as an expat—Russia, Algeria, Sub-Saharan Africa, Azerbaijan... and the south of this country (Najran) near the Yemeni border. I often went to Jeddah and don’t have the fondest memories of this part of the world. Don’t let this discourage you, though...

Thanks Wayembam! Yeah, I know all that—I’m Muslim and it’s specifically to go on our pilgrimage, but by camper van. I’m of Moroccan origin and a naturalized Belgian. We’ve already visited several countries. What I’m asking is whether Saudi Arabia will let us enter and what we need to do for the visa application. Also, has anyone already done this by camper van or car?

Hello, Yes, of course you could go, and actually traveling through Europe is even better. Personally, I made this trip from Algeria through Libya and then Egypt, crossing a huge desert. You apply for an Umrah visa without telling them how you’re traveling. In Jordan, you pay a vehicle tax of 100 DJ if it’s diesel or 20 DJ for gasoline. Plus, 100 riyals for one month of insurance when entering Saudi Arabia. Have a great trip!

Hi there, my husband and I share the same dream—we don’t own a motorhome yet, but it’s in the works, God willing. I was wondering if you had any concrete info about this trip. Did you go for Umrah? Do you have an idea of how many days to plan for: travel + pilgrimage + return? Any thoughts on the itinerary?

Best,

Soumaya

Hi there, It’s been three years since I made this trip, from Algeria via Libya, Egypt, and then Jordan. It was a beautiful journey, but unfortunately, it’s now impossible to pass through, especially via Libya. However, you can still go from Europe, unless Syria becomes even more unstable. For us, it took six days of driving from Ghardaïa to Medina, but at a slow pace—we drove during the day and slept at night, sometimes stopping to cook and eat. It was truly amazing—go for it, and good luck! If you’d like any other tips, don’t hesitate to ask me.

Hi everyone, first of all, thank you all for sharing and for your solidarity.

Regarding the administrative formalities, apart from the Umrah visa at the Saudi consulate in Paris, is there anything else required when leaving from France?

Is the Umrah visa the same as the Hajj visa, and if not, can you obtain a Hajj visa?

Could you let me know if accommodations are available on-site without any issues, or if it's necessary to book in advance? If so, would you have any contact details or other information to share?

One last question if I may: is the parking for camper vans or buses far from the pilgrimage sites?

Thanks for your help, and Ramadan Mubarak, inshallah.

Salam aleykoum We asked around, and they told us there’s no problem, but that the camper van (CC) won’t be allowed through—we’d have to leave it at the border and take a bus or rent a car, and that we’ll find everything on-site for accommodations, etc. But we’re a little worried—what if we get there and they don’t let us in? Still, we’re up for trying, inshallah, Allah y aoun mouslimine

hi soumaya sorry for the delay, but we're still looking for info, and with everything that's happening in a row, we're scared I hope Allah calls us to go insha'Allah, hang in there too for your cc purchase, if you have any news too, let me know
HA Hadjhocine ·
Hi, may Allah help you all, inshallah. I have a question, particularly about the visa: How do you go about getting the visa, given that the Saudi embassy only issues it to organizing agencies?
FA Fatoche124 ·
salam brother if you know an imam who handles registrations he can arrange it as if you're going in a group and he’ll submit the visa application for you God willing, insha'Allah
HA Hadjhocine ·
Salam Hajj, thank you for your precious information, may God protect you inshallah. Happy Ramadan, and maybe we’ll meet someday—who knows? I’m heading to Oran next October inshallah. Take care.

Salam Alaykom Fatoche124,

No, I don’t have any more info than you do, you know—we don’t have a camper van either! We’ll see what God has in store for us, but for now, it’s still a dream. Plus, seeing how things are unfolding in Libya, Syria, etc., I think we’ll have to wait a bit or maybe go through Europe instead.

Take care,

Soumaya

salam you're right, all this scares us since we travel a lot by camper van. We're afraid to go to those areas, and we'd rather wait until things calm down and Allah calls us, insha'Allah

Otherwise, if the situation improves, there’s a ferry from Venice to Alexandria to Tartous (Syria). Check it out here: http://www.visemarline.com/en/homepage.php

salam alaykoum

Any updates? If I sum it up, the most practical and cheapest route is Europe_Turkey_Syria_Jordan_Mecca... but the situation in Syria is bad...

Otherwise Egypt, but the prices are huge, right?

Salam alaikum, I know it’s been 8 years since you posted this message, but I’m planning to go to Mecca by motorhome, Insha’Allah, with my wife and kids. Ever since I tried motorhome travel, I’ve been hooked! I’m of Moroccan origin, I was born in France. Anyway, have you managed to make this dream come true? If so, could you give me some advice? Thanks so much in advance! I already own a motorhome, thanks.

Salam alikoum, I have the same plan as you. I’d like to know how far you’ve gotten with the administrative stuff—has your project moved forward? Barakallahoufik.
