Je m'appelle Martin, j'ai 25 ans et je suis parti vivre au Chili il y a 5 ans deja. J'ai cree mon entreprise a Valparaiso il y a 4 ans, dans le domaine de l'education. Je me suis egalement marie avec une chilienne.
Nous pensons de plus en plus rentrer en europe. Le Chili est un pays incroyable, mais tres inegalitaire et totalement prive, avec tout ce que ca implique au niveau de la sante, de l'education, des pensions, ...
Je parle couramment l'espagnol, et j'ai la nationalite francaise et belge.
Mon epouse possede uniquement la nationalite chilienne et ne parle que l'espagnol, mais a un master chilien en education musicale.
Au niveau des diplomes, je dispose juste du bac general, mais j'espere pouvoir valoriser mon experience d'entrepreneur ici au Chili. Le fait de connaitre le marche chilien et d'une maniere generale celui de l'Amerique latine, ainsi leur mentalite, peut peut-etre me servir.
J'aimerais connaitre votre avis concernant l'endroit le plus adequat selon vous en fonction de notre situation pour rentrer en europe. J'ai des amis et des connaissances un peu partout en France et en Belgique, qui peuvent nous heberger le temps de trouver un job et un appartement.
La Belgique ne me semble pas une bonne destination, car je ne pense pas que le fait de parler espagnol couramment me servira beaucoup, et puis le climat ne nous attire pas particulierement.
Peut-etre pourrions-nous aller dans le sud de la France, pres de l'Espagne, mais meme probleme, connaissez-vous une ville ou mon espagnol et celui de mon epouse sera valorise, ainsi que mon experience professionnelle ? (Toulouse, Montpellier, Marseille, ...)
Notre derniere option serait d'aller vivre en Espagne, ou nous n'aurions pas de probleme au niveau de la langue, mais je ne connais pas la mentalite des espagnols, si ils valorisent l'experience, si vous pensez qu'il serait facile pour nous de trouver un job, et si oui, dans quelle ville ? (Barcelone, Mardid, Valencia, ...)
Voila, si quelqu'un peut m'eclairer et me donner son point de vue, ca serait super interessant pour nous. Je peux aussi vous parler un peu plus du Chili et de l'Amerique Latine en general si vous le voulez.

Je suis d'accord avec vous le Chili est magnifique mais bien particulier.
Si vous rentrez en Europe, vous allez perdre le fruit de vos cinq années à Valparaíso, vous aller recommencer à zéro et surtout, vous n'aurez plus le statut d'indépendant, vous aurez un patron et c'est difficile de devoir suivre des ordres après avoir été son propre chef.
Par ailleurs, si votre épouse est chilienne mais que vous l'avez connue au Chili, s'adaptera-t'elle à l'Europe?

Ce cap du bilan est parfois atteint bien plus tôt en un ou deux ans, sans compter les candidats au rève Chilensis qui sont balayés, ruinés, désilusionnés en 6 mois.
Il est clair que le bilan d'une expatriation au Chili se rèvèle trés souvent négatif alors que je cosnstate que rêve Chilensis est souvent survendu.
Pour Martin :
Je crains que ton expérience/expertise Chilienne soit peu utile en France ou en Belgique.
Il faudrait trouver une entreprise trés engagée sur un projet d'implantation ou de commerce avec le Chili et j'ai l'impression que cela est peu courant.
Ton expérience serait trés utile pour une entreprise Européenne mais j'ai toujours eu le sentiment que les Européens s'interessent peu aux conditions locales, aux particularités, aux conditions nécessaires pour réussir une implantation, une vente, une percée.
Carrefour, Renault, JC Decaux sont des exemples d'échec ou de stagnation chronique.
Cela est bien dommage et éviterai des échecs fracassants.

Perso, je n'ai jamais compris la stratégie de Carrefour.
Débuter avec sa propre marque -que personne ne connaissait au Chili-, au lieu de racheter une petite chaîne existante, en maintenant le nom d'abord, puis en prenant de l'expansion petit-à-petit, et enfin changer le nom et impose le propre. Algo se me escapa, gringo no entender.

Leur étude de marché a dù ètre fait par des escrocs issus de quelques universités pourraves dont on taira le nom. Lamentable.

WAL MART a été beaucoup plus malin. Lider a dù leur couter énormement....mais Lider est le leader....et wal mart est dans la place.
JC Penney ouhhhhh tu remontes loins, ouais je me rappelle....Il est vrai que Ripley, Falabella et Paris sont pro sur ce format et Galeries Lafayette est un nain boiteux á côté.
El corte Ingles en Espagne peut peut etre leur etre comparé.
Dans mon secteur, Dupont/Pioneer et Monsanto, US, sont des exemples d'installation éfficace au Chili.
Je ne suis pas du tout pro US, mais il faut reconnaître leur habileté face á des semenciers Français erratiques, indécis, archaïques bien que la comparaison des moyens financiers soient une part de l'explication.
Tu es jeune, tu as seulement 25 ans ! Tu parles aujourd'hui parfaitement espagnol. De rien, dans un pays qui n'est pas le tien, tu as monté ta propre entreprise. Chapeau !
L'expatriation de ta femme est évidemment une question très importante, voire la plus importante, la famille n'a pas de prix.
Mais si tout s'engage bien, ta jeunesse et ton expérience sont des points importants et à mettre en avant. Peut-être ne trouveras-tu pas tout de suite un emploi dans une entreprise tournée vers le Chili, mais le fait d'être bilingue et auto-entrepreneur t'ouvrira des portes.
Et puis tu verras, avoir un patron n'est pas le bout du monde. On a de toute façon toujours quelqu'un au dessus de soi. Si ce n'est pas le patron, c'est la banque, les impôts, les clients ...Etc...

Désolé d'être direct, mais ton expérience ne sera pas valorisée en France...
De plus ton épouse va avoir du mal à se faire à la vie en France, ce sera assez difficile. Surtout en ne parlant pas le français. J'ai dans mes collègues le cas d'un couple dont la femme est Chilienne, ce n'est pas facile.
En aucune manière le fait de vivre près de la frontière espagnole ne sera un atout car à part peut être à Perpignan, les gens ne parlent pas les deux langues.
Tu repars à zéro, avec une expérience personnelle qui te servira bien entendu mais qui ne sera pas valorisée par un employeur. Les entreprises qui ont des projets avec le Chili ont déjà leur structure sur place le plus souvent, et connaissent bien le marché.
Peut être peux tu te rapprocher des services de notre Ambassade à Santiago, notamment le service de coopération culturelle, en évoquant ton projet de retour.

Je pense que la décision d'aller en Espagne est la pire des toutes celles que vous envisagez car, si j'ai bien lu vos deux posts, vous ne connaissez pas l'Espagne, vous n'avez pas de contacts là-bas et vous ne connaissez pas leur mentalité qui est différente de celle des chiliens.
Moi je resterais au Chili en rajoutant une corde à votre arc. Maintenez votre petite société éducative en fonctionnement et essayez une activité parallèle, cela doit être possible, non?

SI je comprends bien, tu es au Chili, avec une épouse Chilienne et bien entourés par sa famille. Tu as monté une petite entreprise, vous avez une vie sociale.
Sachez que partir, même en Espagne ou la lange est la même (enfin presque 😏) risque d'être un vrai déracinement.
C'est un projet à construire à deux, en réfléchissant bien aux conséquences et aux risques.
Tu as un bac, ce qui est (désolé) très peu comme diplôme en Europe ou les Master et autres Bac + 6 inondent le marché de l'emploi.
Et tu ne seras pas si proches de ta famille que cela. Valencia, Madrid, Barcelone, on ne va pas passer un week end à Paris (et encore moins ailleurs en France) comme cela. Cela coûte de l'argent, et du temps de transport.
Sans rentrer dans les raisons qui guident ton souhait de quitter le Chili (qui ne nous regardent pas vraiment) j'ai l'impression que vous ne retrouverez pas facilement tous les deux une qualité de vie telle que celle que vous avez.

Oui, je dois m'expliquer un peu sur les raisons. En gros, à part un peu le manque du pays, la seule famille que j'ai, mes deux grand-parents, sont agés, et je sais qu'ils ne vont pas vivre encore 10 ans. Et aller les voir reste un gros sacrifice financier au regard de notre situation. À côté de ca, mes amis me manquent. Ca peut paraitre bête, mais ici au Chili, j'ai beaucoup plus de mal à me faire des amitiés sincères, pas les mêmes réferences, une langue différente, je ne sais pas. Cela n'enlève rien au fait que les chiliens sont vraiment des gens très acceuillant. Et aux niveaux des européens, généralement ils sont tous de passage et restent au maximum un an. Et puis au niveau de notre entreprise, pour le moment on arrive à en vivre, mais sans plus. Ca nous permet de payer les factures, la nourriture et deux ou trois sorties par mois, ce qui est déjà pas mal, j'en suis conscient, mais par exemple, avec mon épouse on aimerait pouvoir acheter une maison, et on sait que notre situation ne nous le permet pas, nous ne pourrions pas avoir de prêt. Maintenant je comprends aussi qu'ici au Chili on a quelque chose, et retourner en france serait recommencer de 0 et seuls ou presque.
Bonsoir, votre retour en France avec une épouse chilienne ne parlant pas la langue et loin de sa famille et de l ambiance de son pays , cela va etr compliqué pour elle , mais le plus complexes est que si vous rentrez a 2 en France sans un budget conséquent pour tenir au moins 1 annee , ce qu il vous faudra pour faire les démarches et au mieux trouver un job et un appartement...cela va être une épreuve pour vous deux ...rien n est impossible dans la vie...certes..mais il faut bien l assimilé avant de rentrer. Votre expérience en France ou Espagne n est pas un plus..désolé mais au vu de la conjoncture et des diplômes qui sont au chômage ou font des petits jobs alors qu ils sont surdiplomes , est une réalité a ne pas négliger.Être hébergé sera aussi compliqué les amis sont sympa pour 3mois peut-être mais au delà ca devient pour eux et vous pas vivable et en 3 mois trouver job et appartement impossible. L Espagne est sympa, mais le taux de chômeurs et plus important qu en france et pour prêter de l argent pour une maison la banque espagnole ne vous prêtera qu avec de solides références et pas au bout de 1an sur place..de plus vous ni avez aucun relations la bas...donc l Espagne a éviter..
l idée si c est que vous voulez vraiment rentrer, venez seul en éclaireur , voyez les réelles possibilités qui pourrait vous être offertes et ensuite faire suivre votre épouse si le bilan est positif.Se faire héberger seul et voyez sur place la réalité de votre motivation a rentrer en France, et il reste que pour ceux qui vous héberge c est plus raisonnable de venir seul..Mais rien n est impossible ou insurmontable si on s organise, on se pose les bonnes questions et si on fait un travail en amont, en deblayant au maximum avant de se lancer . Ça me réconforte pas mal de lire ça, ça fait cinq ans que je vis au Chili (j'y étais allé avant mais seulement des séjours courts), et je n'ai jamais trouvé que le Chili est un pays où il est difficile de s'adapter. Ça me réconforte car parfois j'ai l'impression d'être le seul à le penser.
Sinon mon conseil est qu'il vaut mieux écouter ses envies que ses craintes.

We’re thinking of one or two "escapes" from Rio—3-day trips to get away from the city (so not too far, max 3–4 hours by car or bus). We’re all ears for suggestions! We love beautiful nature and authentic experiences, not so much the touristy spots... even though those spots are often in beautiful places, we’d rather avoid them.

I’m planning a trip with my partner (no kids this time—thanks, Grandma!) for two weeks to celebrate her 40th birthday. I’ve been thinking about Chile. We’re looking at leaving around September 18, 2027, starting in the south and returning in early April.
Here’s what I had in mind:
8 nights in a van in the Lake District and the start of the Carretera Austral (up to the Chaitén area). We’re set to arrive in Puerto Montt around 2:00 PM. We don’t want to go too far south since we’re planning to explore the heart of Patagonia (Chile and Argentina) with the kids when they’re older. The idea is to spend 3 nights discovering the lakes (up to Cochamó) and 3 nights in Pumalín Park. I’ve also added two transition nights.
7 nights in the Atacama to experience another side of Chile (San Pedro), taking a domestic flight from Puerto Montt to Calama in the early afternoon. We’ll depart for France in the early evening from Santiago.
IMPORTANT NOTICE for those planning to take a bus to another city, state, or destination from Salvador!
Starting January 20, 2026, the intercity bus station Rodoviária is changing its address!
The Rodoviária is leaving the Iguatemi area and will now be located in ÁGUAS CLARAS (about twenty kilometers from downtown Salvador).
A brand-new station (the most modern in Brazil) has just been set up there, accessible by car/taxi/Uber/metro.
Allow for much more transfer time (especially during rush hours), so leave early if you're heading to Chapada Diamantina or other Brazilian cities by bus.
Remember, there are also private transfers (even French-speaking ones) that can take you directly from your hotel in Salvador to your hotel in Chapada. Sure, it’ll be more expensive, but you’ll save on transfer time and comfort.

We're planning a trip to southern Chile in November. Here's our tentative itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Santiago, then a flight the next day to Balmaceda where we'll pick up a rental car to reach Coyhaique.
Day 3: Walk in the Coyhaique National Reserve, then continue to Puerto Chacabuco. Return to Coyhaique for the second night.
Day 4: Drive to Villa Cerro Castillo for a hike in the national park. Continue to Puerto Tranquilo and stay there for 3 nights.
Day 5: Boat tour on Laguna San Rafael.
Day 6: Day trip to Monte San Valentin Glacier.
Day 7: Excursion to the Marble Chapels, then drive to Puerto Guadal. We'll stay there for 3 nights.
Day 8: Walk along Lago Carrera and return to Puerto Guadal.
Day 9: Rio Baker Valley and, if possible, a glacier excursion.
Day 10: Drive to Cochrane and hike in Tamango National Reserve. We'll stay 2 nights in Cochrane.
Day 11: Walk in the Chacabuco Valley.
Day 12: Drive to Caleta Tortel. We'll stay there for 2 nights.
Day 13: Cruise in the Rio Baker delta.
Day 14: Return to Cochrane.
Day 15: Return to Balmaceda in two stages.
Day 16: Continue the return journey.
Day 17: Return the rental car and head back to Santiago.
After this, we're also planning to explore northern Santiago. I'll post about that part once I have a clearer idea of the route.

Below is our draft itinerary (with questions at each stop):
29/11: France → Colombia. Overnight in Bogotá.
30/11: Exploring Bogotá: La Candelaria and Montserrate.
01/12: Gold Museum (closed on Mondays). Drive to Zipaquirá (1.5 hrs) to visit the Salt Cathedral. Then drive to Villa de Leyva (3 hrs). Explore the town. Overnight in Villa de Leyva.
02/12: Return to Bogotá via Laguna de Guatavita (5 hrs). Is it worth the detour? Overnight in Bogotá.
03/12: Flight to Pereira. Drive to Salento. Overnight in Salento.
04/12: Cocora Valley (hike among the wax palms) followed by a drive around the area. Are there any waterfalls or other sights nearby?

I’ve sketched out a rough itinerary but I’m not sure how to arrange it—considering the climate, year-end holidays, and Carnival.
Basically, I’m thinking of the Amazon, the Northeast coast with Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (but skipping Chapada Diamantina),
Ouro Preto, Paraty, and Ilha Grande—but no Rio visit.
Is this doable in 3 months?
Which direction should I take for this itinerary?

After lots of research and quotes, it’s the only one offering Uyuni at a reasonable price while meeting all the criteria: transfer to the border, private-room accommodation, and a very fair rate. Hi everyone, French travelers in Chile—what credit cards do you use for your various car rentals in the country? I’m traveling in September and was planning to switch my regular debit card (a VISA PREMIER in deferred debit mode) for the deposit guarantee.
My rentals are with Figal in Punta Arenas, Econautos in Arica, and Chilean Rent a Car in Temuco, and all of them want the deposit on a credit card. For me, deferred debit *should* work, but I’ve read comments saying the opposite.
How’s it actually working on the ground with these rental companies right now? Will a deferred debit card work, or not at all?
In France, banks don’t issue credit cards, right—or am I mistaken?

I’m desperately looking for info on the schedules and routes of (shared) boats to visit the islands of Lake Titicaca.
From what I’ve found, there’s a *combi* (bus) that leaves from Puno to go to Llachon. Where do you catch it? What are the schedules and frequency? Does it take about 1 hour?
Then in Llachon, you can take a boat to Amantani (45 min). Same question—where do you check for frequency and schedule?
After that, from Amantani, boats go to Taquile and then Uros. Do you have enough time to visit the islands between two boats? Frequency and schedule?
The goal is to do this tour independently (no agency) over 2 days. Thanks for any tips you might have!
I just got back from a trip to Bolivia and wow—what a wake-up call. It’s not the easiest country, but it’s absolutely stunning.
I started with Isla del Sol, perfect for easing into the altitude at a relaxed pace. Try to stay in the northern part of the island—it’s quieter and the views are insane. And the trout there? Unreal. Quick tip: bring cash in small bills; they almost never have change, and cards are rarely accepted.
Next up, La Paz. The city’s pretty wild, built in every direction. I did a few hikes in the area, including the famous Charquini Lagoon (the blue lake) at over 5,000 m—let’s just say I struggled 😅 but it was so beautiful it was totally worth it.
After that, I headed to Sajama. It’s cool, especially for the hot springs, and I stayed in Tomarapi. But honestly, if you’re short on time, you can skip it without too many regrets.
The highlight of the trip: the Salar. I did it starting from Tupiza, and I *highly* recommend going Tupiza → Uyuni. Way less crowded at the start and the landscapes are super varied. For the tour, I used SplitYourGuide to find a group, and it worked out great. Super handy for splitting costs and meeting people.
I wrapped up in Sucre—this city is gorgeous, all white, with such a chill vibe. And the salteñas + ice cream? Next level 😋
Bottom line: Bolivia’s a bit rough around the edges, sometimes exhausting (shoutout to the altitude), but it’s 1000% worth it.

I was planning to go to Réunion and stay in half-board accommodation with non-professionals, but it seems that’s not really the custom there—or maybe my budget isn’t big enough.
So, since I’ve already traveled around Ecuador and Peru, I’m now looking at Argentina, especially for its mountains (like the ones in Réunion that tempted me, even though—frustratingly—I could only admire them from below).
I plan to get around by bus and don’t know in advance where I’ll sleep, so I won’t book ahead. If I like a place, I might stay for several days.
I know that in Chile, it’s easy to find half-board accommodation, but what about in Argentina?
I’d like to stay with locals in half-board without it being a professional setup. I’m not sure if this is common practice there. It’s up to me to find someone willing to host me.
What do you think?
What would be a fair price (keeping in mind that 40 to 50 € is the max I can spend on accommodation, breakfast, and dinner)?

We’re heading to Patagonia for three weeks in November, starting from Coyhaique in Chile.
We won’t have a car, and I’m struggling to find information about transportation options for a few parts of the itinerary we’d like to do:
1) From Perito Moreno (the town, near Los Antiguos), we’d like to travel down Ruta 40 to visit Perito Moreno National Park and then cross into Chile via the Paso Roballos (at the latitude of Bajo Caracoles) to reach the road to Cochrane. Without a car, it seems we’ll need to use private agencies to get to the national park—do you have any recommendations or suggestions? Also, does anyone know if it’s possible to cross into Chile via Paso Roballos (from Bajo Caracoles) without a rental car? That is, without having to go all the way down to El Chaltén or back up toward Perito Moreno/Los Antiguos, etc.?
2) The second stretch that seems a bit tricky (though still easier, in theory) is from Caleta Tortel to Villa O’Higgins on the Chilean side. Do we have to go back through Cochrane, or are there ways to get directly from Tortel to Villa O’Higgins?
3) Finally, we’d like to hike into Argentina (El Chaltén) from O’Higgins. Any recommendations for this? Do we need to go through an agency? What’s the estimated duration of the trek?
As you’ve probably gathered, we want to visit some off-the-beaten-path spots but don’t have a car, so we’re looking for the best possible compromises.

we’re planning a round trip from San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, to Salta, Argentina, in two months. On the way there, we’ll take the northern route via Susques, Route 27, then 52. But for the return, we were thinking of taking the southern route via San Antonio de los Cobres, Route 51, then 23. Is it similar to the northern route in terms of road surface? How busy is it, and are there gas stations? Basically, should we be worried about doing it in an SUV that’s supposedly 4x4 but has regular road tires and no second spare wheel, obviously...
I’ve seen that we can stop over in San Antonio de los Cobres.

we’ll be in Calama at the end of March 2026, and I’m looking for a reliable car rental there for a 7-day road trip to Salta, Argentina. But I’m struggling with the car rental agencies in Calama because the reviews can be scary. I saw Gyg, which has great ratings, but I’m a bit wary (5/5 from 59 reviews—either the guy’s amazing or it’s fake...), but I can’t find any recent reviews on VF in general.
For Punta Arenas, I booked with Dachelet and didn’t have any issues with email exchanges.
