Hi everyone,
It's tough to see all of Sri Lanka in 15/16 days. Trip planned for February 2025.
We really want to visit Jaffna, but that takes 2/3 days, so it's hard to cover the North, the Center, and the Southwest.
Maybe skip the west coast or just stop in Galle for a quick look? Or is it a must to go there before heading back up through the Center, then the North, and finishing in Kalpitiya? Are the beaches and swimming good in February?
Which are the most beautiful beaches that aren’t too built-up to end the trip?
Thanks so much for your tips!
Best,
Nicole

Hi again,
I’m adding more details to my info request. Here are two proposed itineraries. We’re hesitating:
Colombo - Unawatuna 2 days - Sinharaja 1 day - Bandarawela 2 days - Kandy 3 days - Dambulla 2 days - Wilpattu Park 1 day - Kalpitiya 3 days - Negombo 1 day
What should we change or add a day for to include Jaffna?
Or: Negombo 1 day - Anuradhapura 2 days - Jaffna 2 days - Sigiriya 2 days - Dambulla 1 day - Kandy 2 days - Ella 1 day - Galle 3 days For your advice. Is it better to finish in Galle or Kalpitiya? Thanks in advance! Nicole

For once, I'm sharing my experience after benefiting from other travelers' tips to take the plunge and rent a car (without a driver).
First, don’t hesitate! (Unless you just got your license the day before.) The roads are good—even very good in the north (the situation seems to have improved a lot). Driving is "Italian-style"—you can fit 3 or even 4 cars on a two-lane road. Sri Lankans aren’t suicidal (I wouldn’t have done it in India, though...). No issues with police checkpoints: we were never stopped in 25 days (unlike Sri Lankans...). These days, with Google and connectivity, you can’t get lost. Plan short trips (for us, it was between 2 and 4 hours with Google Maps estimates). Price: for a basic car, between 23 and 25 € per day, and gas isn’t expensive. I didn’t rent a car in Colombo (we used the PickMe app for tuk-tuks or car transfers with luggage). I also left the car parked in Kandy—it was a bit more intense there with narrow hillside streets and motorbikes/tuk-tuks driving a little wild. Big advantage: automatic transmission.
For me, aside from the first intersection, no stress—if you’re tired or not feeling it, you can drive as slowly as you want (unlike in France). I also drove and overtook like the Sri Lankans naturally.
Basic tips (but if you’re a driver, they’re obvious): - The bus is the boss: you’ve got to yield. - Unlike Sri Lankans, avoid overtaking without visibility. - Stay aware of your surroundings: cows, dogs, monitor lizards, pedestrians... so if there’s something, slow down!
I caught myself driving up to 90 km/h without realizing it but then slowed down (speed limits: 70 on rural roads, 100 on highways).
Of course, you’ll need an international driver’s permit or a temporary Sri Lankan license (I had both, but no one asked for them).
Renting a tuk-tuk was trendy among young travelers (I don’t get the appeal for a long trip—maybe 2 or 3 days since they’re slow, not that economical, more dangerous, and you can’t leave your stuff inside. Plus, the passenger sits behind the driver, and we had temps up to 37°C).
For a car, it’s great because it makes you independent: schedules, routes, supermarkets, restaurants...
Hope my feedback helps! !

Hi there,
I can't figure out how to get to Ella from Tissamaharama by bus. Could someone help me out? There are four of us, each with a travel bag, and we prefer taking local buses if possible. Do we need to book a car with a driver instead, and if so, what’s the cost? Do you know any reliable companies?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

Hi everyone,
We’re planning our 3-week trip to Sri Lanka from July 31 to August 21, 2025. Our itinerary is coming together, but we could use some advice for our arrival. Our flight lands at 2:40 AM. What should we do? Book a hotel near the airport? Or in Negombo? Head straight to Colombo? What about currency exchange offices at 3 AM? And what about getting a SIM card?
Thanks in advance for your tips or firsthand experiences!
Have a great day.

Hi there.
We’re leaving for Sri Lanka in just a few days for three weeks.
After some thought, we’ve decided to rent a car with a driver.
I’m a bit overwhelmed by all the ads, and I’m feeling a little lost about booking confidently from France... Especially since I’m more used to going through big international rental companies. What worries me most is the insurance and the quality/safety of the car—more than the languages spoken or how friendly the driver is.
Do any of you have experiences to share to help me out, please? Thanks in advance! 😊

Hi there,
For our trip to Sri Lanka from July 31 to August 21, 2025, we can't seem to find a reliable price range on various blogs for intercity taxi rides without private drivers. We'd like to alternate between trains, buses, and taxis (for 2 people) and would love to get an idea of the going rates for taxis, as well as any company names based on your experiences. I checked out "12Go Asia"—has anyone used this site to book transport in Sri Lanka? Is it reliable? Thanks in advance, Have a great day!

Hello, we’re planning a trip to Sri Lanka in April 2025.
We’re a family of four adults, and we love getting off the beaten path while still enjoying local life and, of course, visiting the main tourist sites (after all, you can’t visit a country without appreciating its highlights!).
We’re looking for a reputable travel agency for a private trip with a driver and a guide—whether they speak French or not. Yes, it’s possible! We were lucky enough to have this experience on our last two trips to India and Laos. It was absolutely wonderful, insightful, and enriching thanks to the local visits.
Anyway, if anyone has done a similar road trip, we’d love to follow in your footsteps.
Thanks for all your tips!

Hi there,
We’re planning to visit Yala Park for half a day. Could anyone tell me which block is the most interesting to visit, given that we’re coming from Tangalle?
Thanks for your reply.

Hi,
We’re planning a trip to Sri Lanka with our kids in July (ages 5 and 9). Could I get your thoughts on this itinerary?
D0. Arrival in Sri Lanka at 10 PM, hotel nearby (we’re coming from a stopover in Dubai) D1. Depart for Galle, visit Galle in the afternoon. Overnight in Galle D2. Depart for Tangalle, beach time, then drive to Udawalawa. Overnight in Udawalawa D3. Udawalawa NP, then drive to Ella. Overnight in Ella D4. Ella. Overnight in Ella D5. Drive to Kandy. Visit Kandy. Overnight in Kandy D6. Explore Kandy, then drive to Polonnaruwa. Overnight in Polonnaruwa D7. Polonnaruwa. Overnight in Polonnaruwa D8. Minneriya NP, then Sigiriya. Overnight in Polonnaruwa D9. Drive to Trincomalee. Beach time. Overnight in Trincomalee D10. Whale-watching excursion, Pigeon Island. Overnight in Trincomalee D11. Drive to Anuradhapura. Sightseeing. Overnight in Anuradhapura D12. Wilpattu NP D13. Return to the airport. Flight at 5 PM
I’ll admit the last few days feel a bit rushed. We’d be traveling by car with a driver.
Thanks so much for your help! Bruno

Hi there,
We’re a family with kids aged 10 and 12, and we’ll be in Sri Lanka during the Kandy Esala Perahera. I’d love to know if it’s really worth prioritizing the procession on the final night—is it that different? What do the other nights miss out on? From what I’ve gathered, you can watch for free if you’re okay with sitting on the ground, which isn’t an issue for us. In that case, is it still easy to get a good view? We’ll be coming from Jaffna—are train tickets to Kandy harder to get during the Perahera? Also, August 8th is a public holiday. Do trains still run on public holidays?
Thanks in advance for your tips! !

Hi everyone!
So happy the forum is back—I’ve been part of it since 2012! ☺️
After lots of twists and turns with Sri Lanka’s visa (called ETA) over the past few months, here’s a quick recap of the current situation for travelers:
- You need to get an ETA, either online or on arrival. I recommend doing it online because it’s cheaper (here’s a step-by-step guide to avoid common pitfalls: https://www.tongsetsrilanka.com/mode-demploi-pour-eta-au-sri-lanka)
- It’s valid for 30 days and costs $50 online or $60 on arrival.
- It was supposed to be free starting October 1st, but due to the elections and Parliament being dissolved, that didn’t happen. Stay tuned in December in case the topic comes up again.
- The online ETA is recorded in your passport, so you don’t need to show any documents, but I’d still recommend traveling with the confirmation.
- If you didn’t receive the confirmation email, you can check the status on the official ETA website.
- The only official site is eta.gov.lk. Watch out for agency websites pretending to be the official one.
- Avoid filling out your ETA on the French version—it’s buggy. Use my guide and do it in English instead. 😅
Happy travels! Caroline

Hi there,
Back from Sri Lanka, we have some local currency left. This could be useful for you.
Here’s what I’m offering:
1 x 5000-rupee note
3 x 1000-rupee notes
2 x 500-rupee notes
3 x 100-rupee notes
2 x 50-rupee notes
6 x 20-rupee notes
That’s a total of 9520 Sri Lankan rupees, or 31 €.
This way, you can start your trip without having to withdraw money right away at the airport and without paying any fees.
For reference, here are some typical costs:
Bottle of water: 130–160 Rs, tuk-tuk ride: 100–500 Rs, bus trip: 50–200 Rs, meal with a drink: 1500–2500 Rs.
Possible to send in an envelope.
Hi there!
I need your advice :)
We’ll be in Sri Lanka in April, a group of 9 adults.
Which safari would you recommend, please?
Thanks for your replies!

Hi there, we’re spending March in Sri Lanka, and on several blogs travelers mention they’ve rented scooters or mopeds.
On government info sites, it seems they say you need a Sri Lankan license to rent these vehicles. Have any of you run into this kind of issue?
Thanks, Marie
Hi there,
I’ve been reading conflicting info about whether an Indian visa might be required for a few-hour layover in Mumbai.
Do we need anything besides the Sri Lankan ETA if we’re just transiting through India without leaving Terminal 2 at the airport? We’re flying from Brussels via Frankfurt and then Mumbai with Lufthansa.
Thanks so much—I’m totally lost here! 😅

Hi everyone, I’m thinking of visiting Sri Lanka at the end of February 2025, but I’m worried about the economic situation (shortages of food, electricity, internet, fuel, etc.) as well as the political and social climate (strikes, protests, etc.). Has anyone here been there recently and can describe what it’s like?
Is the current situation stable enough to travel in this beautiful country without any issues? Thanks for your replies.

Hi there,
We’d planned a hike in the Knuckles at the end of February, but everything I’m reading about leeches is freaking me out—I know I wouldn’t handle having one on me (call me a wimp if you want 😅).
Is it really that bad? Plus, it sounds like a lot of tiring road just for a day trip.
What do you recommend?
Thanks so much! 😊
Hi there,
I have another question:
Should I bring dollars since hotels on Booking are listed in dollars...
or should I exchange my euros for rupees?
Thanks for your experience!
Hi,
Are 100 € bills accepted at exchange offices in Sri Lanka?
Thanks for your replies.
Hi there,
It's really tough to book seats for early February.
After trying multiple times on the official online sites, everything seems to be fully booked already.
Hiring a taxi is an option, but even then, there aren’t many choices—agencies prioritize tour packages.
Do you have any tips for making the trip from Kandy to Ella?
Thanks!
Have a great day.
Hi there,
I’m heading to Sri Lanka for a month on January 6th.
I’d love to know whether it’s more interesting to start in the north or the south of the country, especially for the beauty of the landscapes—by train in particular.
Thanks for your help!
Hi there,
I’ve sketched out a rough itinerary for Sri Lanka (from late February to late March), starting in Colombo and then going clockwise (so I’d begin with Negombo, Anuradhapura, and I don’t think I’ll head all the way north to Jaffna because that’s a lot of kilometers just for a round trip—unless you can convince me otherwise! ;)). After that, I’ll hit the Cultural Triangle and then the tea plantations in the center of the island. The east coast will depend on how much time I have left and the weather (I’ve heard March can be rough on the east coast). I’ll wrap up my trip with the beaches in the south, back to Colombo. 😊
What do you think of this 4-week itinerary? (On the map, a few points aren’t connected by lines—that means I’m not sure if I’ll go there):
https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1TX9sgHSjh9iwINIIknOG4LtCieNdUOw&ll=7.716250171694787%2C81.39557361748045&z=7
Maybe there are a few too many stops, so I’d love some suggestions to streamline this itinerary a bit.
Thanks in advance for your feedback and advice on how many days to spend in each place! :)
Hi there, we’re heading to Sri Lanka in early February for 15 days. We’d like to do a few days of trekking and thought we’d need an agency and a guide, but we’ve heard about the Pekoe Trail—a long-distance trail that’s supposedly well-marked. Is that accurate? Is it doable on our own? I’d love to hear from anyone who’s familiar with it. Thanks!
hi there
I’m heading to Sri Lanka for a month from January 6th to February 3rd, then I’ve got a flight to the Maldives from February 3rd to 15th, and... I’m coming back to Sri Lanka for one night from the 15th to the 16th to catch my flight back to France. Because my flight ticket is from January 6th to February 16th... I’m wondering about my travel authorization. Will I get a transit authorization for one day to board my flight?
Thanks for shedding some light on this!
Hello
I’m leaving for just under a month in Sri Lanka. Departing from Toulouse on December 9, 2024.
No set itinerary, but roughly: the south (Galle) for snorkeling, Ella, Kandy, Dambulla, Sigiriya, Tricomalee+Nivalelli, Isurumuniya, and finishing near Negombo.
Flight to Chennai on January 6, 2025.
4/5 days in Chennai, then the Andaman Islands for 2/3 weeks. After that, Pondicherry, Madurai, Cochin, Kerala, and Goa. I’ll improvise.
Since I’m traveling for three months total, I’ll prioritize guest houses and/or mid-range hotels. I’ll also use local transport (with a few exceptions).
I’m retired and open-minded. I’ll leave my travel blog here—you’ll get a little sense of me: http://famillevoyageetlh.eklablog.com/sulawesi-p3015543?

hi everyone, just a quick stop in Tangalle to enjoy the beach and relax
stayed at "Patini Bungalows" by the sea, direct beach access
bungalows very clean, amazing welcome from Severine, Daya, and their two kids
long beach, several kilometers to walk, lots of great and cheap restaurants:
"Malika" and "Little Pumpkin"
good mid-range options: "Star Fish", "Blue Horizon", "Zanzibar Restaurant", "Chance Lanka"
nicer upscale spots: "Ibis Bungalows", "Ganesh Beach"
loads of accommodations on that side of town and quite a few along the Matara road
best to use tuk-tuks for transport, even to get to Temple Rock; anyway, traffic conditions
are tough for all transport—average speed is only about 40–50 km/h max
at restaurants, expect to wait around 30–40 minutes for food everywhere—nothing’s prepped ahead of time
this is Sri Lanka, and "tomorrow is another day"; say hello to all the friendly locals—it’ll make their day
swimming conditions can be tricky; better to swim in the morning and listen to local advice
not far from the port, fishermen bring their nets ashore with help from the community
if you’re passing by, lend a hand—it’s a great experience
market days are Wednesday and Saturday near the bus station
small shops are nice and cheap; for mail, the post office is near the hospital
Tangalle is a simple little town where mass tourism hasn’t taken over yet—enjoy it while you can!
happy travels!
hi there,
what a joy this forum is back up and running!
so happy to be the first Sri Lanka post.
it’s helped me plan so many real trips—unlike other sites that are mostly commercial, pushing drivers, and such.
