Cities and Cultural Heritage

Archipel des Bijagos, Guinée Bissau
Bijagos Archipelago
This is the country's most developed tourist area. Beyond the unique culture of its inhabitants, it offers beautiful landscapes blending savanna, forests, and mangroves, deserted beaches, and significant marine wildlife, including sea turtles and hippos. The archipelago is especially renowned for sport fishing.
Bolama, Guinée Bissau
Bolama
Built on the small eponymous island, the city was the capital of Portuguese Guinea for over half a century. This has left it with a certain colonial architectural heritage, though not necessarily in good condition. There are a few beaches nearby.
Bafata
Located inland, it is the second-largest settlement in Guinea-Bissau. A colonial district still remains. The surrounding forest is known for its monkeys and antelopes.
Bissau
The capital and main city of the country. It still has an old center with several buildings dating from the Portuguese colonial period.
Cacheu
As early as the 16th century, this was the first Portuguese trading post in the region, later becoming a major center for the slave trade, as evidenced by an old fort. The surrounding mangrove is a designated natural park.
Varela
On the border with Senegal, the locality is prized for its tranquillity and beautiful beaches.
