Accommodation in the Bahamas
FR

Overview of the offer

The Bahamas primarily—and logically—offer accommodation consisting mostly of hotels, including large hotels accustomed to North American or all-inclusive clientele. Alongside these, you’ll also find numerous villa or apartment rentals, typically high-end as well. For budget options, there are only a few B&Bs and guesthouses, which aren’t always top-notch in terms of comfort (no campsites or youth hostels on the islands). That said, outside of package deals, accommodation in the Bahamas remains quite expensive, as do many other things. Often, hotel rates are listed without taxes.

Note that in Nassau and Grand Bahama, some establishments specialize in hosting "spring breakers." "Spring breaks" (Easter holidays) are when American youth come to let loose, particularly in the Bahamas, and especially to take advantage of the ability to drink alcohol from age 18 (compared to 21 in the U.S.). The result can be rather pitiful, so it’s best to avoid this period—and especially those establishments—if you’re not interested in that kind of atmosphere (and the prices that come with it...).

Hotels and all-inclusive resorts

There are over 250 hotel sites in the Bahamas, generally high-end, pleasant, and very well-equipped. At best, expect to pay around $100–120 minimum for a double room per night. This is why weekly all-inclusive packages are a better deal, offering a much better price-quality ratio and a wider choice of establishments.

Themed accommodations

These are hotels or groups of bungalows, usually high-end as well, linked to a specific activity or type of stay. You’ll find boutique hotels—unique, highly personalized establishments—fishing lodges (at sea), dive accommodations, "spa specials," and of course charming spots for honeymoons, as well as private islands with their own lodgings. While all of this comes at a cost (more affordable with packages), the quality is usually excellent.

Guesthouses and B&Bs

These are generally the cheapest accommodations, starting at around $50 for a double room at best. Often, they’re small structures that can only host a few people, so booking in advance is key during peak season. That said, quality can vary widely in this category.

Which accommodation to choose?

If you haven’t opted for a weekly all-inclusive package, the best bet is to try to find a small guesthouse or B&B at a somewhat affordable rate. That said, the Bahamas remain a "dream destination," and it might be a shame to spoil the experience with accommodation that doesn’t quite match the setting...
