Other practical information for the Southern United States
Luggage and equipment to bring
For the "Gulf of Mexico" area, plan lightweight clothing year-round and a sweater for evenings or air conditioning. Moving northward, however, a warmer layer may be useful around January when it can occasionally get chilly. Also pack sun and rain protection, mosquito repellent, and sturdy shoes if you plan to hike.
For mountainous regions or those bordering Washington, lightweight clothing works in summer—though still bring a light sweater—while the rest of the year, and especially in winter, you’ll want to dress accordingly. Again, pack sun and rain protection, mosquito and midge repellent, and good walking shoes.

Time difference
The region spans two time zones:
- "Eastern Time": for all Atlantic-side states (Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia).
- "Central Time": for states along or near the Gulf of Mexico.
- The states of Kentucky and Tennessee straddle both zones, creating a one-hour difference between their eastern and western parts.
