A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is one of the world’s largest coral reefs, stretching along the Belize Cayes. Naturally, the area is a diver’s paradise.

Overview

The cayes are small, low-lying islands primarily made of sand and coral. Over four hundred of them, of all sizes, lie off the coast of Belize in the Caribbean Sea, surrounded by the second-largest coral reef in the world. True paradises for divers, with stunning beaches to boot, several of these islands—such as Ambergris (the largest), Caye Caulker, Caye Chapel, and others—have become major tourist hotspots, some catering to the upscale market.

Main Towns

With a population of 13,500, San Pedro is the "capital" of Ambergris. It’s also the only town in the Cayes with typical Caribbean architecture. Elsewhere, on the other islands, you’ll find just a few small settlements like on Caulker or simply hotels with their "outbuildings."

Transportation

Getting There

By Air

There are many daily flights between the mainland and the islands, with prices generally ranging from $50 to $80 USD per trip. Note that flights departing from Belize City’s municipal airport are often more affordable than those from the international airport. Two local airlines operate these routes: Maya Island Air and Tropic Air.

By Sea

Access to the Cayes from Belize City remains the country’s main boat route. The line runs Belize City – Caye Caulker – San Pedro/Ambergris (continuing on to Chetumal in Mexico). The small companies San Pedro Water Taxi and Belize Express Water Taxi's operate frequent daily crossings with their fast boats. The cost is between $15 and $20 USD per trip—much cheaper than flying.

Beyond these routes or companies, you’ll find other local options for getting around by water, such as the CCWTA from Caulker, or elsewhere along the coast and on "secondary" cayes like Tobacco. Check locally for more options.

Getting Around

Since the cayes are small, you can explore them on foot, by bike, or occasionally by golf cart.
