Major Airlines

Several Canadian airlines provide transatlantic air transport, including Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, Air Transat, Sunwing, and WestJet. They offer scheduled or charter flights across Canada and worldwide.

The airlines recognized for offering low-cost flights are Air Canada Rouge and WestJet.

International Carriers

  • Air Canada: This airline was founded in 1937 and is Canada’s largest air carrier. It is part of the Star Alliance network, the world’s largest airline alliance. It operates around 205 aircraft serving over a hundred destinations worldwide (these figures exclude its subsidiaries, Air Canada Express and Air Canada Rouge). Its hubs: Calgary, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver.
  • Air Canada Rouge: A subsidiary of Air Canada, launched in 2012, specializing in leisure travel with low-cost fares. It is part of the Star Alliance network. Around 39 aircraft serve over 70 destinations worldwide. Based in Toronto.
  • Air Transat: This major airline specializes in vacation travel. Founded in 1987, it has a fleet of nearly 40 aircraft serving over 60 destinations in 30 countries. Its hubs: Montreal and Toronto.
  • Sunwing: This family-owned airline began operations in 2002. With a fleet of 34 aircraft, it serves over 48 destinations in 21 countries. Based in Calgary, Quebec, Toronto, and Vancouver.
  • WestJet: Founded in 1996, this airline is Canada’s second-largest carrier. It operates nearly 118 aircraft (excluding its subsidiary WestJet Encore), serving Canada, the Caribbean, the United States, Mexico, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. Based in Calgary and Toronto.

National Carriers

  • Air Georgian: Based in Toronto, it operates flights for Air Canada Express, serving various Canadian and U.S. destinations.
  • Jazz Air: Based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with secondary hubs in Calgary, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. It operates for Air Canada Express, serving nearly 80 destinations in Canada and the United States.

  • Air Creebec: Based in Val-d’Or, Quebec, this airline is owned by the Cree Nation of Quebec and operates regional flights in Quebec and Ontario.
  • Air Inuit: Based in Montreal, Quebec, it primarily serves communities in Northern Quebec, connecting them to Quebec City, Montreal, and Sept-Îles.

  • Air Saguenay: This company is a major bush airline operating in Eastern Canada. It has several bases in Quebec: Caniapiscau, Chibougamau, Chute-des-Passes, Schefferville, St-David-de-Falardeau, and others.
  • Air Tindi: Based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. It operates scheduled and charter flights to remote communities in the region.
  • Aklak Air: Based in Inuvik, Northwest Territories. It serves scheduled and charter flights in the region.
  • Bearskin Airlines: Based in Thunder Bay, Ontario. It serves Northern Ontario and Manitoba.
  • Buffalo Airways: Based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. It operates scheduled flights between Yellowknife and Hay River, as well as charter flights.

  • Harbour Air: With several bases in British Columbia, its seaplanes operate scheduled and charter flights in the province.
  • Hawkair: Its main base is in Terrace, with a secondary base in Vancouver, British Columbia. It offers scheduled and charter flights in Alberta and British Columbia.
  • HeliJet: Based in Vancouver, British Columbia. It offers scheduled and charter flights, as well as helicopter tours.

  • Summit Air: This airline’s main base is in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, with secondary bases in British Columbia and Alberta. It operates scheduled and charter flights in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon.
  • Sunwest Home Aviation: Its main base is in Calgary, Alberta, with secondary bases in Edmonton and Winnipeg. It operates charter flights across Canada and worldwide.
  • Transwest Air: Based in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. It serves several regions of the province.
  • Voyageur Airways: Based in North Bay, Ontario. It operates charter flights worldwide.
  • Wasaya Airways: Its main bases are in North Bay, Pickle Lake, Red Lake, and Sioux Lookout, Ontario. It is owned by First Nations and offers scheduled flights to around twenty communities in the region. It also operates charter flights.
  • West Wind Aviation: It has bases in Saskatoon, La Ronge, and Stony Rapids, Saskatchewan. Owned by First Nations, it serves Saskatchewan.
