Sea Temperature Throughout the Year
Logically, sea temperatures differ between the North Island and the South Island. In the north (Auckland), the water is relatively pleasant during the austral summer (end/start of the year) and much less so between June and October (austral winter). As for the South Island, it's "worse"; especially as you head down the coast to Invercargill, the country's southernmost point, where the sea never exceeds 13°C year-round.
