Climate and Weather in the Dominican Republic
Location Map of Dominican Republic
Climate Overview
The Dominican Republic has a relatively mild climate, and the heat is never excessive (though it can feel somewhat oppressive in "summer"), with daytime temperatures year-round ranging between 28 and 31°C and nighttime temperatures between 20 and 23°C. Additionally, the trade winds from the east and northeast make the atmosphere even more pleasant—at least along the coast. In the central mountainous regions, it’s cooler, with temperatures occasionally dropping near 0°C at night.
While the island receives rainfall throughout the year, with brief showers in the late afternoon and evening, the rainy season primarily spans May to November, with a slight lull in July and August. However, regional variations exist: the northeast (Samaná) tends to be the wettest, while the southwest near Haiti (Barahona) is the driest. In between lies the southeast coast and the Punta Cana region. As for hurricanes, they most commonly affect the Dominican Republic from late August to October.
Best Time to Visit the Dominican Republic
The period from December to April is ideal if you want to avoid heavy rains, oppressive humidity, and hurricanes, which are most likely from August to October. That said, the climate isn’t necessarily a dealbreaker for visiting Santo Domingo.
