Climate and Weather in the Southern United States
Climate Overview

The South boasts a varied climate and microclimates that change with latitude, terrain, or altitude. You’ll find temperate zones with a continental climate (especially in northern or higher-altitude areas) alongside tropical and subtropical regions. The South is most commonly associated with its hot, humid climate—long summers and short, mild winters. While there are nuances, the region can broadly be considered a vast subtropical zone.
In much of the southern part of the region, summer temperatures typically range from 25 to 32°C, while the rest of the year sees averages of 12 to 18°C. The hottest and most humid period runs from late May to late September. Due to its location, the area is also prone to hurricanes, which can be devastating—like Katrina, which ravaged Louisiana in 2005. The highest risk period is June to November, peaking in August–October.
Best Time to Visit the South
For the southernmost areas, where summers are intensely hot and humid or early autumn brings cyclones, spring is the most pleasant time to visit, with November to early December as a secondary option. In the northern parts, where the climate is more continental, the best period is from May to early October, though July and August can still be quite warm.

Sea Temperatures Throughout the Year
Given the region’s size, water temperatures vary depending on where you plan to go. Along the northern Atlantic coast, the sea is only pleasant for swimming in summer, while elsewhere, you can generally swim from April to early November.
