Climate Overview

Honduras's climate varies by region, from tropical in the low-lying coastal areas (the Caribbean coast is more humid than the Pacific) to more temperate in the mountainous zones and high valleys of the interior.

Like the rest of the region, Honduras has a dry season and a rainy season. The latter runs from late May to October (with a brief lull in July-August) for much of the country, excluding the northern coast. This is a period of intense heat and humidity, which can make the atmosphere stifling even at higher altitudes, such as in the capital, Tegucigalpa, despite its elevation of over 1,000 meters.

Generally, the northern coast remains the wettest area, with nearly twice the rainfall of the rest of the country and year-round precipitation, though it lessens between February and late June. It’s also on the Caribbean coast where hurricanes and cyclones can strike around September to early November.
