Climate and Weather in Mexico
Climate Overview
Given the country's size and diverse terrain, it's no surprise that Mexico has a varied climate depending on the region.
In Baja California and the northern part of the country, the landscape is desert-like and dotted with cacti. Whether you're by the sea or in the high plateaus, the heat is intense in summer, though nights can be slightly cool at higher altitudes. Winters are pleasant along the coasts, but in the mountains, temperatures can drop significantly. Rainfall is low everywhere, with only July to September bringing occasional heavy showers.
The Mexico City region and central Mexico are characterized by high elevations exceeding 5,000 meters, surrounded by coastal plains. While the climate cools with altitude, it also varies by season. The region has a distinct dry season and rainy season. Rain falls from late May/June until the end of September, often in the late afternoon, with more precipitation on the Caribbean side. During this time, humidity along the coasts can make travel somewhat challenging. The rest of the year, from October to April, is the dry season and more comfortable.
Finally, in Chiapas and the Yucatán, as well as the Guatemalan border region, there’s also an alternation between the dry season (from late October to May) and the rainy season (the rest of the year). The latter is particularly pronounced in the southern zone, where dense forests thrive. The Yucatán Peninsula, with its tropical climate, is also prone to hurricanes between August and early October, which can then move north along the coasts. Additionally, there may be some rain in early January, even during the dry season.
Best Time to Visit Mexico
One advantage of a large country is that you can visit almost year-round—just choose your region based on the season. For northern Mexico, March–April and October–November are ideal, though October–May is generally pleasant despite some winter chill in the highlands. In central Mexico, the dry season from October to April is best, though you’ll need a jacket in the mountains toward the end of the year. For the south, November–May is the most appealing, though early in the year can be slightly misty with occasional cool spells and light rain.
