Climate and Weather in Montenegro

Climate Overview

Although the country is not very large, two distinct climates can be identified: one along the coast and another in the interior, particularly in the mountainous regions.

As is often the case, the coastal area enjoys a pleasant climate year-round, with mild winters and summers that are not too hot thanks to sea breezes and maritime air. However, it does rain in autumn, especially in the west. The interior, on the other hand, has a more extreme climate, with summer temperatures that can sometimes be scorching (though they are milder at higher altitudes) and more pronounced winters that can be very cold in the Dinaric Alps. This mountain range also sees the heaviest autumn rainfall, with precipitation levels that can locally break European records.

Best Time to Visit Montenegro

Like many places in Southern Europe, the shoulder seasons are the most pleasant—from late April to late June and from September to early October. This avoids the intense summer heat in the interior and, on the coast, the crowds during the same period.
