Climate and Weather in Senegal
Location Map of Senegal
Climate Overview
Senegal has a dry tropical climate in the north (the Sahel) and a more humid climate in the south (savannas and Casamance forests). The year is divided into two seasons: a dry season from October to June (longest in the northern part of the country) and a rainy season ("the hivernage") from July to September. The latter is the time for tornadoes and heavy rains, which can make travel difficult.
Temperatures are pleasant along the coast thanks to sea breezes, but much hotter inland. Average temperatures can reach up to 40°C in April-May around Tambacounda. Nights, however, can be quite cool, especially from December to April.
Best Time to Visit Senegal
The dry season is the best time to visit, particularly for national parks. However, November to March is ideal if you plan to explore the interior, as it avoids the extreme heat of April-May.
