CouchSurfing

CouchSurfing is a global network that connects travellers with the local communities they visit, particularly through the principle of shared accommodation. In French, the term "CouchSurfing" can be translated as "moving from one couch to another."

While the idea isn’t new and similar organisations (Servas, Hospitality Club, etc.) have existed for a long time, the association has undeniably revived—or "democratised"—the concept. Founded in 2004, CouchSurfing now has several million members worldwide and has become the go-to reference for shared accommodation.

Participation is voluntary, "more or less" free, and exchanges are facilitated online. You sign up on the website and get a personal page to describe your profile, communicate, and share your experiences as either a host or a guest.

Other networks

Servas

Founded 60 years ago in the United States, Servas is an international association of hosts and travellers working for world peace. It operates in almost every country and has tens of thousands of members. Its system is based on "active" accommodation, meaning participation in the host’s daily life. Servas members can obtain a list of people who can host them worldwide, typically for a maximum of two nights. To become a member, you need a sponsor and must complete a short interview.

The Hospitality Club

Meet-ups, mutual aid, and accommodation between travellers—this is the guiding principle of the club, which has tens of thousands of members worldwide.

Globalfreeloader

A small English-speaking network offering free or low-cost accommodation for budget travellers in around a hundred countries.

Cyclo Accueil Cyclo

A database where cycle tourists can find affordable accommodation with locals during their travels. The service is provided by the Cyclo Camping International association CCI.
