Entry Requirements and Visa for Montenegro

People

For French Citizens

All nationals of European Union countries do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days (within any 180-day period) for tourism purposes. A national ID card is sufficient for stays of less than 30 days, and a passport is required for stays of 30 to 90 days. Note that ID documents must still be valid upon entry and during the visitor's stay.

Special Measures

Any foreigner, regardless of nationality, traveling to Montenegro and staying with private individuals must in principle declare their presence at the local police station where they will reside. If staying in a hotel, rental, or campsite, this formality is handled directly by the accommodation provider, so no additional steps are needed.

There is also a currency declaration requirement, both for entry and exit, for any cash amount exceeding 2,000 €. A declaration and proof of funds acquisition are mandatory to avoid confiscation of the sum.

Other Nationalities

The same applies to nationals of many countries, including Canada and Switzerland, who also do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days.

Long Stays

For stays exceeding 90 days in Montenegro, obtaining a temporary residence permit is generally required. This can involve setting up a local business, purchasing residential property, or qualifying as a "Digital Nomad" with a minimum declared income (between 1,500/2,000 € per month). That said, the country is not particularly strict with European nationals.

In Case of Violation

As is common, overstaying may result in a fine or deportation with a ban on re-entering the country. However, given the legal options to extend a stay for Europeans, it’s best to avoid such issues.

Vehicles

It is easy to travel to Montenegro with your own vehicle. You simply need a green card, the vehicle registration document, and a French or other European driving license.
