Entry Requirements and Visa for Nepal

For French Citizens
For a tourist trip to Nepal, a passport valid for at least 6 months after the planned departure date and a visa are mandatory. The visa can be obtained most easily on arrival at Kathmandu Airport or at the main land border crossings (bring 2 photos), or in advance from Nepalese representations abroad. Conveniently, all procedures and forms are available on the official site of the authorities.
Several tourist visas are available, with different numbers of entries and permitted lengths of stay. They are offered in durations of 15 days for $30, 30 days for $50, and 90 days for $125. In all cases, the visa must be paid in cash, in US dollars or the equivalent in euros.
Other Nationalities
The same applies to most other Europeans and Swiss citizens.
Long Stays
Once in the country, it is possible to extend a tourist visa in one-month increments for a fee of $30 each time. Ultimately, the maximum permitted stay in Nepal under this system is 150 days per calendar year.
In Case of Violation
As always, overstaying your visa incurs a fine. This is calculated as a fixed fee of $45 plus $5 per day of overstay, which quickly adds up. In more serious cases, this can also lead to deportation and a ban from the country for several years. Therefore, if possible, it’s best to plan for a visa extension, as it will be much cheaper.
Trekking Permits
For trekkers, several regions of the country require specific, paid permits per day or week. This is the case for the Upper Mustang and the Dolpo, which are popular with hikers and also the most expensive in terms of permits, costing $50 per day on site.
Attempting to bypass these permits is hardly possible, as solo trekking is not allowed in these areas, and you must be accompanied by a guide licensed by the Nepalese authorities. Since only they and their agencies are authorized to purchase trekking permits for foreigners, there’s no way to avoid this requirement.
