Entry Requirements and Visa for Sri Lanka
Location Map of Sri Lanka
Travelers
For French Citizens
A fairly popular destination, Sri Lanka has relatively lenient regulations for many nationalities. For tourist travel, French citizens must hold a passport valid for at least six months beyond their entry date, along with—occasionally requested—a return ticket and proof of sufficient funds for their stay.
Additionally, an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is required, allowing a "double entry" stay of 30 days. This is available online only via the official site approved by the authorities. The fee, equivalent to $50 (free for children under 12), is also paid online.
Other Nationalities
The same rules apply to Canadians, Swiss citizens, EU nationals, and several other nationalities.
Long Stays
For stays beyond the initial period, options include applying for a "Digital Nomad," "Retiree," or "Resident" visa, which require specific procedures and substantial funds. For tourists, the simplest approach is to request a stay extension. By visiting the Immigration Offices in Colombo, you can apply for an additional 60 days, followed by two further 90-day extensions, allowing a total of 9 months in the country.
In Case of Overstay
As is common, overstaying may result in a fine. In more serious cases, there is a risk of deportation and future entry bans. However, extending your tourist visa provides a good opportunity to avoid such consequences.
