For French Citizens

A Chinese visa does not allow direct entry into Tibet, as access is regulated. A special permit is required, and a guide is mandatory, whether traveling in a group or individually. After submitting copies of your passport and Chinese visa, along with your planned itinerary details, it takes between 1 and 2 weeks to obtain the permit from an accredited travel agency, either in China or abroad. Roughly, the permit costs the equivalent of 70 €, plus the guide’s fee, which is paid at the same time.

Note that all these regulations can change without notice from the Chinese authorities. Access to Tibet may even be temporarily banned for foreigners, as has happened in the past. In short, for Tibet, it is highly advisable to always check the current situation and requirements.
