Flying to Honduras
FR

General Information

Of the few dozen airfields/airports in the country, only about half a dozen handle regular domestic flights or those arriving from various cities in the region—or even from the continent for the most important ones.

The capital Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, and the Caribbean coast/Islas de la Bahía are the three parts of Honduras with the highest domestic and international traffic. Unlike most countries, the capital’s airport is not the most important, with only half a million passengers per year. Considered very challenging from an aviation standpoint, it has always been overshadowed by San Pedro Sula, which also serves key tourist areas like the northern coast or the ruins of Copan. Each year, it welcomes nearly 800,000 passengers (780,000 in 2014).

That said, the coastline and islands also benefit from fairly good service via direct regular or seasonal flights. While Roatán Island’s airport is the busiest, those on Guanaja, Utila, and the La Ceiba coast also see significant traffic.

Types of Flights

Local Airlines

Honduras has about half a dozen locally branded airlines, all small and primarily operating small aircraft on domestic routes.

  • AeroCaribe de Honduras: This San Pedro-based carrier offers on-demand and scheduled domestic flights along the Caribbean coast.
  • Aerolíneas Sosa: Based in La Ceiba, this airline operates eight aircraft serving several Honduran cities as well as Guatemala.
  • Avianca Honduras: A subsidiary of Colombia’s Avianca, it flies between Roatán, San Pedro Sula, and Tegucigalpa, as well as Guatemala City under its own brand, among the roughly 100 destinations served by the Avianca group.
  • CM Airlines: A small local airline providing domestic service between seven Honduran cities, plus Guatemala City internationally.
  • EasySky: While waiting to launch regular domestic flights, this new airline operates charter services.
  • Lanhsa Airlines: Specializing in domestic flights, particularly along the Caribbean coast and islands.

Charters, Scheduled, and Low-Cost Flights

Seasonal flights, especially from the U.S. and particularly Quebec/Canada, primarily serve the islands—Roatán in particular.

Promotions and Special Offers

Beyond occasional seasonal flight deals, especially from Quebec, other promotions for Honduras typically come from specific airline offers, particularly from U.S. carriers, on their networks including the country.

From France and Europe

There are no direct flights between Europe and Honduras. All options require at least one connection, with U.S. airlines (American, Delta, United) being the most common for European travelers. San Pedro Sula is generally preferable to Tegucigalpa in most cases. Note that even for a simple transit through the U.S., an ESTA is required to continue your journey.

Alternatively, you can transit through or explore arrival options in better-served regional hubs like Guatemala City. From France to Honduras, expect at least a full 15 hours of flight time with layovers, with round-trip fares ranging from 580 to 900 €.
