Flying to Sweden
FR

General Information

Sweden has two major "airport zones" with Gothenburg and especially Stockholm, which has several airports and is by far the country's main air gateway, with over 25 million entries per year. Additionally, there are around forty other regional airports primarily serving domestic flights, though some also offer regular connections to neighboring countries or charter flights to "sun destinations." Note that if you're heading to southern Sweden, Copenhagen Airport in Denmark is very close and can be a good alternative.

Types of Flights

Local Airlines

Sweden has around ten airlines with its own branding. Beyond a few charter-only specialists (Avia Express, Novair, TUIfly Nordic), you’ll find:

  • Braathens Regional: A regional airline that actually operates for other carriers, particularly Swedish ones.
  • Direktflyg: A very small company with just one route, Östersund-Umeå, which may soon disappear.
  • Hoga Kusten Flyg: A small local airline operating flights between its base, Örnsköldsvik (in the north), and Stockholm-Arlanda.
  • Kullaflyg: A few regular flights between its Helsingborg base and Stockholm or four or five other Swedish cities.
  • Malmö Aviation: One of Sweden’s main airlines, with a small European network and a strong domestic presence (around a dozen airports). It subcontracts some routes to other carriers. Its base is Malmö.
  • NextJet: The country’s main regional airline, with flights across Scandinavia and to around fifteen Swedish airports. Its base is Stockholm-Arlanda.
  • Scandinavian Airlines: SAS is the national carrier for Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. While it operates many international flights, it also serves domestic routes, particularly between Stockholm-Arlanda and around a dozen Swedish cities.
  • Sverigeflyg: A grouping of seven small local carriers offering domestic flights.

From France

From Paris

Gothenburg and Stockholm are served from Paris, with flights to the Swedish capital taking roughly 2 hours 30 minutes. Prices: from 110 to 250 € round trip.

  • Stockholm: Air France and SAS from Roissy; Norwegian seasonally from Orly. Plus Ryanair from Beauvais.
  • Gothenburg: Hop! and SAS from Roissy. Plus Ryanair from Beauvais.

Choosing Your Flight

Given the price range for flights from Paris, it’s best to prioritize direct flights. These generally offer a good balance of quality, duration, and price, unlike connections, which can take nearly half a day to reach your destination. After that, simply compare offers by checking the airlines’ websites directly.
