Getting Around Amsterdam
Location Map of Amsterdam
Getting Your Bearings
Public Transport
For public transport, the city has a network of buses, trams, a metro, and even small ferries that connect the city centre to the northern part of the city via the IJ river.
Other Transport Options
Car
Amsterdam is not at all car-friendly, especially in the city centre. It’s highly recommended to leave your car in a parking lot for the duration of your stay.
Taxis
Bicycles
Bike
Bikes have long been associated with Amsterdam. Many residents use them as their only mode of transport. It’s an excellent way to explore the city independently, though urban cycling always requires some attention to safety—for yourself and others. One downside is the rain, which can sometimes spoil a ride.
Scooter
On Foot
Walking is almost ideal for visiting the city, which isn’t huge and has most points of interest clustered together. If you get tired or the weather turns bad, you can always switch to public transport.
What’s the Best Way to Get Around?
Almost anything except a car! Choose based on your mood: walking (especially in good weather or in the centre), biking (same, or for slightly out-of-the-way spots), or public transport (if the weather is really bad).
