Getting Around Dominica
Location Map of Dominica
Road Network and Traffic
The island's road network is average, with only about half of the roughly 1,500 km of roads paved. The best roads are along the coast and around the capital. Elsewhere, roads can be narrow, steep, and potholed or damaged during the rainy season. Additionally, local driving can be unpredictable, so it's best to stay cautious—especially since driving is on the left in Dominica—and avoid traveling at night.
Car Rental
Some visitors consider renting a car. Both international and local rental agencies are available on the island; local ones are usually cheaper, with basic rates around $40–50 USD per day (discounts for weekly rentals). While many recommend a 4x4 (around $60 USD/day) for touring the island, they aren’t always necessary outside the rainy season for most tourist routes. It depends on your plans.
That said, given the island’s small size, you don’t need to rent a vehicle for your entire stay. Two or three days may be enough to explore the country and visit key attractions, after which you can use other transport options as needed. Note that renting a car requires purchasing a Dominican driver’s permit, often available from major rental agencies, costing 30 EC$ (about 9 €) per driver, valid for one month. Finally, never leave valuables in your car.
Shared Minibuses
The public transport system consists of minibuses that can carry up to fifteen people. They cover the island well during the day (6:00 AM to 7:00 PM), stopping on demand, and are the primary mode of transport for much of the population. They typically leave when full and don’t follow set schedules. Very common (except on Sundays) and practical, they’re also very affordable and ideal for budget-conscious travelers. Expect to pay around $1 USD per 10 km.
Some minibuses can also be hired for a full day or specific trips, acting as a chauffeur-driven car. This is a good option for groups, with rates negotiable.

What to Choose for Getting Around?
If you want to travel on a budget, shared minibuses are by far the best option. You can also combine them with a one- or two-day car rental to freely explore the island.
