Bus

As in many countries, there are two categories of buses: the "basic" ones (often old American school buses), which are by far the most economical but slow, and the "express" or similar services, which offer better service for a slightly higher price. Both types generally operate or depart in the morning and stop by the end of the day. Note that bus robberies can sometimes occur on certain routes.

Hitchhiking

For safety reasons, hitchhiking is best avoided. Additionally, it is usually not free (bus fare applies), and public transport is inexpensive.

Trains

As in many Latin American countries, the rail network is now limited despite various projects that remain more or less current depending on the era. There is only one line between the capital and Apopa in its suburbs, managed by the state company Fenadesal.

Absent Transport

There are no domestic flights or regular boat routes within the country, though for boats, you may find opportunities to explore the Gulf of Fonseca in eastern El Salvador.
