Getting Around in Cyprus

As is often the case in Europe, having your own vehicle is an excellent way to explore the island—or at least the Troodos Mountains. In fact, it’s the best option thanks to the freedom and time saved compared to public transport, which isn’t always the fastest and doesn’t go everywhere. Of course, renting a vehicle is far more practical and obvious than bringing your own, which must go through the Turkish part of the island, the only side with ferry connections.

Buses and Shared Vehicles
Buses
Cyprus’s (southern) bus network is relatively dense (see network, fares, and schedules) with intercity routes, such as those operated by Intercity Buses, connecting cities daily and regularly. Rural buses also serve nearly all villages, linking them to nearby major towns with one or two trips per day, except on Sundays. Generally, even if buses are a bit slow, they remain affordable (count 3 or 4 € per 50 km segment) with various passes available. They’re also a good way to get around for those without a vehicle.
Intercity Taxis
These vehicles carry between 4 and 7 passengers on regular routes between major cities, usually departing every half-hour on weekdays from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM and until 5:00 PM on weekends. They’re slightly more expensive than buses. You can book a seat by phone or online with the different companies. Rural taxis also exist for secondary routes.

What to Choose for Getting Around?
As always, having a car (or a rental) is ideal. That said, if you’re mainly planning beach trips or traveling only between major cities or tourist areas, buses may be sufficient. At most, you can rent a car when you want to explore the Troodos Mountains, which is much more enjoyable when you’re independent for transport.
