Getting to Lesotho
FR

By land

The country, entirely landlocked within South Africa, shares over 1,000 km of border with it. There are around a dozen main border crossings between the two countries, mostly in the northern part of Lesotho. However, some are only accessible by 4x4, others close in winter, and of all of them, only those at Maseru and Ficksburg are open 24/7 and easily accessible.

There are no passenger trains to Lesotho from South Africa. If you don’t have a vehicle, the only land option is a series of minibuses or, more simply, long-distance buses, such as those departing from Johannesburg (with Vaal Maseru) or Bloemfontein.

By air

Lesotho has a few airfields but only one airport and no airline of its own. This is "Moshoeshoe I International Airport," located about twenty kilometres from the capital. Its activity is very limited, with just one route offered by Airlink—Johannesburg to Maseru—for roughly 150 € per trip, plus private domestic flights by missionaries from the Mission Aviation Fellowship. Note that Bloemfontein Airport in South Africa is not far away (150 km) and provides direct flights to major South African cities.

In short, air travel options remain extremely limited, and regardless of your starting point or country, a stopover in Johannesburg will be necessary.
