Where to Eat
Eating in Mexico isn’t very expensive if you look for small places and prefer local food. In fact, it’s often the smallest expense of a trip in the country. You’ll find small establishments (called "fondas") everywhere, offering a daily special or a "basic" menu that lets you get by for the equivalent of 4 or 5 € at most. For even less, you can turn to small shops selling sandwiches or takeaway meals, street vendors, or "bouis-bouis" to find in markets. And in another category, fast-food chains are also well-established in the country, whether local (the cheapest) or international.
Otherwise, you’ll also find the usual range of restaurants, especially in cities and tourist areas. While prices, styles, and types of food can vary widely, you can still expect a full meal for around ten euros if you stick to "classic" options. However, restaurant prices can rise quickly, especially in areas with many tourists, particularly North Americans. Also, note that service is generally not included in the bill, and a tip of 10 to 15% is appreciated.
