Population

Like in other Balkan countries, Montenegrin society is a mosaic of populations with diverse origins and sometimes cultures that recent historical upheavals in the region have not always prepared to (re)live together smoothly, at least for some.

The country is thus 45% Montenegrin (a majority in the centre and south), 29% Serbian (on the northern coast and along the borders with Bosnia and Serbia), 9% Bosniak, 5% Albanian (in regions bordering Albania), 3.5% Muslim (who identify solely as such), 1% Roma, 1% Croatian (around Kotor), and 6.5% "other". In short, there isn’t always a significant mixing of populations across the territory, which means that certain local languages will be more or less spoken in a region depending on the size of the minority that uses them.

Religion

The country is 72% Orthodox Christian, with a large Muslim minority (19%) and 3.5% Catholic, mostly. Here too, the territorial distribution by religion is closely tied to the ethnic origins of the populations living in each region.
