Luggage and Equipment to Bring

While you can opt for light clothing in summer or along the coast, it's still wise to pack a light sweater to counter the effects of air conditioning or cooler evenings. For the rest of the time, especially when heading inland or into the mountains, you'll want to prepare accordingly—particularly in winter. Don’t forget sun and rain protection, mosquito repellent, and sturdy shoes and gear for hiking in parks and other natural sites.

Budget

In many ways, Texas isn’t one of the country’s more expensive states. You can travel affordably overall, though the distances between points of interest can be significant, requiring a decent transport budget. Generally, you can expect to live on $70 to $100 per day per person (for two).

Precautions

As in the rest of the country, health risks in Texas are minimal, but safety concerns vary by location. Urban areas see the highest crime rates, particularly gang-related conflicts tied to various illegal activities. These incidents typically occur in peripheral or disadvantaged neighborhoods—places tourists have no reason to visit. Still, as a precaution, many downtown areas are best avoided after dark. That said, with basic precautions and common sense, risks remain very low.

It’s also worth noting that Texas isn’t known for its progressive attitudes and has a strong gun culture. The state ranks among the most conservative, steeped in religion, with documented racism against minorities like Black and LGBTQ+ communities. Law enforcement can also be heavy-handed at times.

Beyond people, nature and the environment may pose the biggest challenges. Texas is a rugged land—far more than just its sunny coastal beaches (which can still face severe hurricanes). Deserts and wild mountains are part of the landscape, and while summers are sweltering, winters in the northern regions can be harsh. Be mindful of the climate and its dangers, especially if you plan to hike. Also, take care not to get lost when venturing off the beaten path.
